Hi!
I wanted to get some opinions on the following NY based GPR Programs. I have interviewed at all of them and enjoyed them all. My goal for a GPR is to gain experience to become a competent, confident GP. Not looking for anything OS heavy or crazy call schedules. Just want to choose a program that will have me prepared with tx planning, prosth, restos, endo, etc before I enter private practice. If you can comment on any of these programs or have heard anything about them please reply!

1. Manhattan VA
2. Brooklyn VA
3. Weil/Cornell
4. Mt. Sinai
5. Bellevue

Hi!
I'm pretty connected with NY dentists and know current residents/past residents in all of the NY GPRs. I myself did one of these programs as well. Here's are some honest insights from what I've heard.

1. Manhattan VA: Colleague loved it, great if you want to specialize or even be a bad ass GP. Chill schedule, attendings and directors really cared about resident and working with top notch attendings.

2. Brookyln VA was the best experience. They came out extremely competent, loved the program and amazing connections after finishing residency (cause of VA name).

3. Cornell sells it as a great program, telling residents they will be competent and well rounded but out of all the programs, they do the least. The past resident said "waste of a year." At least 14 weeks you will not be doing actual dentistry. They have 8 weeks of Oral med, 6 weeks of peds and 6 weeks at Sloan and you mainly do basic procedures there. You have to be pretty confident in your dental skills before going into this one because you will not be doing a lot of private practice procedures, it is more didactic and academic based.

4. Mt Sinai: Good well rounded experience but makes you go to a lot of different locations in Harlem, some are far to travel to and in sketchy neighborhoods of Harlem. They have weekend on call I think which can be hit or miss. Depending on the year, some people liked the program, some hated it.

5. Bellevue: Good location, old facilities, mainly pros work, lots of dentures, no restos and very limited endos. My collegue that went there said there's another location that they rotate at and every residents hates it because the assistants are awful and everything is so disorganized there.

Hope that helped! Let me know if you have any more questions! I can also chime in on Brookyln GPRs!

Hi! I was wondering if you had any insight on Brooklyn Methodist, Columbia's GPR, and Metropolitan. I am looking for something very similar to what "dentalqueen2021" is looking for... I've interviewed at those 3 programs as well as Bellevue and Cornell so am trying to decide how to rank. Thanks in advance!

Hi there! Yes I do have insight on Methodist! I had a few friends that did it and one currently in it! They all really love it! Most chill but most comprehensive experience! Their schedule of working 3 days per week really prevents burnout and allows you to have a good work life balance! The benefits there are great and on-call really isn't bad. The 3 days a week really helps maximizing long weekends. One current resident I see travels like every 3 weeks or something! In terms of curriculum, they learn a lot because they don't have any specialties in house. The directors are wonderful, caring and approachable! Hope that helps!

Thank you so much, that’s super helpful. I really appreciate it. Any chance you know anything about Columbia GPR or Metro? No worries if not. Thanks again!

Hi! No problem, I know how difficult it is to select a program because there really isnt much information on it so I'm happy to provide insights.

Columbia GPR is good if you want to do OS or really want to get OS experience. That will certainly set you apart and if you want to apply to specialties, the program has a great name.

When you are asking about Metro, are you asking about the New York Medical College NYCH+H/Metropolitan?
