Hi to all pre-dental and dental students,

First of all let me introduce myself, I am Ash, a first year college student from Chicago.
I am not a 9-5 desk job kind of person, I like to do things and am a more intuitive kind of person, I like to generally help people and SO, I am strongly considering Dentistry as a career because of the above reasons and few others like remuneration, prestige, only 8 yrs. compared to med school etc.
I have been looking at the various colleges and their requirements. Out of all the colleges I've researched, I like UPenn very much. I want to go to its school of Dentistry. So I have to start preparing for it by of course doing all the normal things getting A's and B's, doing well on the DAT which is still 2 yrs. away for me, get experience in dental field and the like.

I will be attending a community college from summer onwards (fall and spring too). So If I do Bio I, II and Gen. Chem I, II in the next year and then transfer to a four year university. Will that be acceptable to UPenn (attending a CC) considering all other things are normal*. Also at this four University I would complete my degree and all the pre req's and some advance courses like physiology, anatomy, histology, microbilogy etc.
Also, Does UPenn or any other top school look for the amount of course load you have taken? If so how much is the average course load for a pre-dental student whose major is something in Liberal Arts.?

*by this I mean, like having all the AVERAGE UPenn student scores/GPA, experience, advanced courses taken. etc.

Thanks to all who answer, I hope this question helps other people too. 🙂

Good questions.

From my understanding most schools will accept up to 60 credit hours from a community college...not too sure about UPenn. Although I recommend that you try to get all A's in your community college.

I know its possible to go this route bec a buddy of mine went to Daytona Beach Community College for 2 years then UNF for Bio undergrad and was accepted to UF dental.

I would definitely check with UPenn if you know that is where you want to go. Some schools are a little more lenient than others when it comes to community college work. Not all schools are going to treat your achievements seriously if you have too much community college work - even if you have a 4.0.

I'm not saying that going to a community college is a bad idea - just be sure you check things out first. 🙂
