Hello everyone,

I've been lurking these forums for a while and wanted to take the time to introduce myself.

I'm from the Chicago-land area, and am on track to get my Associate's in Science and then transferring to UIC to obtain a BS in Bio. Originally I was going for computer science but I realized dentistry was what I wanted to do, especially since I've always been fascinated by the way the human mouth operates. A few other reasons why I want to become a dentist: I like working with the general public, I'd like to own a private practice one day, biology and chemistry is a challenge that I like, and be with other aspiring people. 😀

I plan to stay at UIC to complete dental school. (No surprises why, of course.)

I do have a few questions though:

  1. I don't have any shadowing or volunteering experience at all; I understand I have to have some experience at a clinic or at an office. In order to apply to UIC's dental program, how many hours would I need?
  2. What preparation materials are there for the DAT exam?
  3. How long is the DAT and how many questions?
It'd be really cool to see some of you guys (or girls) as classmates at UIC or the like. 🙂

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

1. UIC recommends 100 hours. Get that, and you should be good for just about any dental school in the nation. (Not mandatory, but recommended. I got in with 80).

2. Check the DAT forum here for more specific information on materials. The test is quite long, hundreds of questions between the various sections and several hours in length.
