hi everyone,

I am new to this forum. I have a few questions:

1)what is the kaplan blue book? Why is it mentioned so much in discussion forums?

2)What are good study materials for the DAT? My sister is a dentist but she wasn't of much help since she took the DAT w/out studying 😱

3)I own a lot of MCAT material (real old tests, Kaplan tests, etc). Are these useful for the DAT(except for the physics section of course)? Why or why not?

Okay, if you want a average/good score..
Use Kaplan blue book, sold for around 50 bucks i believe comes with 2 GREAT helpful practice tests.

If you want/need a really good DAT score..
use Kaplan blue book for all 3 sexns, bio, chem, ochem. Plus for bio, use schaum's outlines biology. Also, get topscore at topscorepro.com, its 50 bucks but has 3 good practice tests.

For PAT sexn, practice practice practice.

Welcome to the forum.

First, your MCAT materials are essentially no good. Since the MCAT is a completely different animal in terms of how they test and what they test, the materials could only be used for supplements.

I would get the Kaplan Course material for the DAT. They have nice stuff like a huge review book with questions at the end of the section, very helpful flashcards and a nice study guide to go by. Not to mention a CD with some helpful PAT excerces.

Of course not everyone has the money for the Kaplan course, nor the time so you can always get the Kaplan Blue book.

+ Get Schaum's outline for the biology section

+ Kaplan's review for the organic chemistry and general chemistry efficient.

+ Topscore software, helpfull for the PAT and is analogous to the actual DAT.


Also, if you use the search button, there is tons of old helpful posts.

Hi there,

1)The Kaplan Blue Book is one of the resources used to prepare the DAT. It has a review of everything on the Dental Admission Test tests and a 2 full length Practise tests (ISBN 0-7432-3506-1).
2) The study materials that are widely used are Kaplan Blue Book for the review of the subjects, TopScore CD for practise, Barron's (which is very good for the Perceptual Ability Test), Schaum's science books (they might have separate books for biology, chemistry and organic) and schaum's usually suplements Kaplan, some use Examkrackers to prepare the DAT and there is another software used to practise the PAT called DAT achiever (www.3tquest.com). You might find these resources in amazon, the making company's websites, ebay, barnes and nobles, borders and many more.
3)The MCAT material would be useful to help you review the course but I am sure you would need to buy the practise test softwares (topscore).

Thanks everyone for the informative and quick responses. I have a few more questions:

1) Has the DAT changed the past couple of years? Would the 2003 Kaplan DAT course material be useful enough if I bought it from someone?

2) Aren't the orgo, chem and bio sections of the Kaplan DAT and MCAT books sold in stores identical (except for the animal kingdom section)?

3) Does the ADA provide any old exams administered in previous years?
