How many hours per week do Family Practice residents work ?????

At my residency interviews they have told me that they adhere to the 80 hour work week, but sometimes are below 80 hours (60, 70, etc.)

They don't come anywhere near 80 at most programs. During your "inpatient months" where you are in the hospital and take call, you may do 60-70, but more often you'll be well under 60 with a monday-friday work week. I'm not a family practice resident, but this is what I've learned from family practice residents at my program and at the program one of my med school friends went into. It's just about the best lifestyle of any specialty that involves direct patient care.

Pretty safe bet that most residents work 70-90 hours a week.

It will vary highly b/t programs. FP has a reputation for cakewalk programs - but I assure you, this is not always the case. Where I did years 3 & 4 (Saginaw, Michigan), the FP residents worked every bit as much & hard, if not more so, than the IM residents - LONG hours! I also have a friend & current PGY-1 at Innova Fairfax's FP program...she would strongly counter your 'theory' that FP residents will struggle to hit the 60hr/wk mark.

In essence, be very careful not to take a specific case (single program) & attempt to generalize it to many programs. Programs, like people, have many & varied personalities, which is why you should research them heavily & from multiple perspectives.
