hey, I just joined the site and I've been doing some research regarding the whole application process to Med Schools. I tried searching thru FAQ's but I'm having problems.
So basically what I've gathered is After we take the MCAT april of junior year or the following august, We sign up for AMCAS and they compile all the data. I guess my question then is How exactly do we obtain applications from the schools we want to go to. Apparently AMCAS sends this info to med schools and then do we just request apps from the schools we want to go to or do we get them from AMCAS, or am I just completly off?
Thanks in advance and I apologize before hand if this has been asked a million times 😀

On AMCAS you designate which schools you wish to apply to, and pay 30 dollars for each of these schools. AMCAS then forwards your information to them. The schools then decide if they wish to consider you, at which time you will recieve secondary applications to fill out.

thanks and the amcas early deadline is aug. 2 and the other deadlines are respective to the med schools where you applied. Got it, thanks

And don't forget that this stage also involves you parting with even more $$.

First of all fill out the AMCAS app AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!!!
Believe me its a pain in the @$$ to fill out, especially the personal statement which can take you a while to get just right. You choose what schools you want in the application itself and pay a fee according to the # of schools you apply to. Get letters of recomendations and send them to each school, then the hard part begins, waiting for secondaries from the schools, calls or emails with invites to interviews. At this point its basically out of you hands so just relax. You can call the admissions office to ask about the status of your application, although I wouldnt do it too much.

so LOR's don't get sent to AMCAS?

how do you go about getting your letters to all these schools? should i collect them from my writers and copy/send them myself?

it's best to use a third party recommendation clearing houses. a lot of large university run a service like this for students; ask your premed advisor if your school has one.

if it doesn't, then a lot of people use a company called interfolio to sent their letters.

using a clearing house really makes it a lot easier on your letter writers. other wise, they'll need to be sending out copies of their rec for you at different times... which can be a huge pain.

good luck,
s

who sends in the LOR's?

i wouldn't expect my writers to send out 30 copies for me. i take it we don't send them to amcas.

so do my writers give me the the letters to copy and mail out or what?

As stoic just pointed out, your school's letter service or premed committee should handle the letterse of recommendation.

Does your school have a premed committee? If so, they'll handle everything.

If not, it likely has a letter service. You ask your professors to send the LOR to the letter service, then pay the service a couple bucks each time you send all your LORs to a certain school.

Interfolio is an independent letter service you can use if your school does not have a committee or a letter service.

Some of your professors may not want to use interfolio and will prefer to just send a letter out personally to each individual school. One of mine did that.
