Greetings! 🙂

Just wanted to say hello & introduce myself. I'm currently a junior and I'm on the fence about osteopathic school. I was introduced to it this past summer and I've taken an interest in the field but I still am going to apply to allopathic schools as well.

Medical school seems so daunting to me right now and I'm just trying to keep my science & overall GPA looking good as well as preparing myself for MCAT which I plan on taking this spring or summer.

Congrats to those who have been accepted and good luck to those taking MCAT in the upcoming weeks!

Thanks! Don't forget to get some community service and leadership activities in 🙂

Welcome!
So how were you introduced to it? Did someone just tell you about another degree to become a doctor? If you're thinking of going the DO route at all I'm pretty sure everyone here would recommend shadowing a DO. To be completely honest, I thought OMM was some sort of crazy crackpot massage( some people still do) until my second treatment. Thats when i really noticed how much it helped and became fascinated with it. But hey, if you dont like it, probably half the practicing DO's Ive seen don't even use it so its completely up to you.

Don't be afraid to ask questions here, people are more than willing to help......as long as you use the search function first lol. Good luck!

DoctorJDO- Thanks, I'm definitely making sure I stay well rounded.

FirefighterDoc - I was introduced to DO this past summer while in a summer program called SMDEP. We had to shadow doctors each Friday & one of the doctors I shadowed in Family Medicine was a DO so I inquired and he answered all my questions. Since doing my own research I've come to find that I'm really interested in the field. My goal for next semester is to have him become my mentor and build a better relationship with him so I'm able to start working on my LOR.

D.O is the way to go...good luck on your journey

That sounds pretty cool. How many Doctors would you say you got to shadow?

As others have said, you have a great attitude. With that kind of attitude combined with your opportunity, the sky is the limit. Aim high regardless of GPA and MCAT. I mean try to do your best but a 3.3 isnt the end of the world.

Thanks everyone, I think that osteopathy really caught my eye because of the method of treating the patient as a whole as opposed to treating one specific ailment and sending said patient on their way.

Be careful not to buy into all the marketing - do you really think MDs do not treat their patients as a "whole" and just kick them out with some meds?

This tenet of osteopathy is something that you can (and perhaps should) bring up during interviews, but really think about what the actual differences will be once you go through your schooling and start treating patients.
