Newest/Nicest EDs

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Newer ED makes alot of things easier...getting records, brighter atmosphere, multiple imaging studies in seconds for comparison, more patients to see per hour...Our program had a crappy ED and now we have the best in our city and multiple attendings have attested to the educational difference pre and post.

We're building a new Peds ER at the University of Chicago.... Wake has a spotless ER which is also super high tech. I thought UPenn and Brigham both had nice ER's when I interviewed.

Highland has a new ED that opened about a year ago - the facilities are beautiful, and there is Wellsoft here too (but paper charts are still used too)

Grand Rapids has a really nice layout and a newly remodeled ED. Because of it and other key administrative moves, I believe we have a really efficient ED. Amazingly, our volume grew by 20% last year and we have been able to handle it quite well. We grew from ~100K a year to 120K.

I totally agree that the physical plant sets the mood for your shift. Working in a crowded work environment can definitely impair efficiency and learning. Patients tend to be more irritated too. Definitely consider this aspect when making your rank list.

aaand it looks like a hotel!

Jacobi just built a new ED. After seeing 15 people cramped into the cubicle that is the work area now (think--sardines), i don't think I would've ranked them if they werent about to move.

the new jacobi ED looks pretty kickass...downstate has a new ED as well; also, USC has a new one that will be open once this year's applicants begin. the most advanced i've seen (with patient/staff position tracking) is at Einstein in Philly. Nuts i say!

I feel Wake has a fantastic setup but its not neccessarily new. I'm surprised more people haven't mentioned Vandy's setup. They have a sweet computer system and new ED. I thought the Peds ED there was one of the best as well.

I thought Vandy's ED was nice, but didn't really compare to UAB's (the measuring stick I compared all the EDs against that I saw).

yeah I heard UAB had a really nice ED. didn't end up going there myself though.

yeah out of all the places i ended up going too, UAB had one of the nicest, and I liked East carolina's too. ECU had a more diamond shaped ED (with the work area in the middle), but both were nice.
