So a resident from a very prestigious hospital came in to talk to our club today. After meeting this lady, I'm convinced ANYONE can get into medical school. Never before have I met someone of such average intelligence and crass social skills. Just a short rundown of her more memorable remarks:

23 MCAT

3.6 GPA (C's and B's in the harder classes like Ochem, Physics and Biochem)

Referred to D.O's as "Chiropractors" when asked why she didn't pursue that route after being rejected by allo schools twice

Compared medical school to surviving the holocaust

I just couldn't believe someone who would say things like this in front of 50+ people, and exhibit just mediocre - below mediocre stats could get so far in the medical world. I think I'm officially done worrying about ever being accepted after that.

She would have to be referring to the holocaust from first hand experience because its extremely rare that any applicant in the last 30 years with those stats could get into U.S. medical schools. Also modern osteopathic curriculum is nearly indistinguishable from the Allopathic so I really hope this lady is from a older time.
 
I don't know whether to be reassurred or scared of who they actually let practice medicine, haha. I'll go with reassurance, lol 😀

Where did she go to medical school and what specialty is she doing her residency in?

It's extremely stupid of her to talk about her stats if they were bad and be proud of it (ie "Look how incompetent I am!").

It can happen at public universities, too. There was a major dust-up a couple years ago when the son of a big political donor was admitted to a state med school having applied after the deadline and without taking the MCAT. The whole thing was exposed and the Dean ended up resigning.

She wasn't really bragging about it, she was giving her spiel about how no one should give up and then proceeded to tell about her stats. She only wound up getting accepted to one state school (I don't think it was due to a donation as her parents are farmers...). Ortho resident now

Stats sound like an URM candidate...

I know several that have gotten in with stats like that dont deserve it based on their academic record.

Her remarks were absurd and proved she has no place in medicine....

I don't know how she weaseled her way into medical school, but there's no way I would have been able to listen to that with my mouth shut.

holey shat ortho. She must've done well in medical school if she landed an orthopaedic surgery residency at a "very prestigious hospital".

wow-I wonder if they took away the kids admission or if that kid still got to go to school 😛

What school did she get into?

Her ECs must of been very good or she had some connections. I've heard less, but this shouldn't be the bar anyone should be setting.

We should not be so quick to judge. We don't know what special connections she had or what extracurriculars she did. We also don't know the circumstances behind her poor undergrad scores. There could be something major there.

It's unfortunate that she didn't come off as being professional (to say the least). Let's just hope that the entire trial of getting into and through medical school doesn't do that to those of us who have the right attitude.
 
AGreed, she may have had the "right attitude" to start with, but keep in mind she's in the middle of a surgical residency and is likely working 90-100 hrs/wk. =p Don't be too quick to judge, if she managed to get a good ortho residency, she's likely not who you judge her to be. (although this IS pre-allo where Burnett's Law rules supreme)
