So in the 90's and even today there was the craze to be a mid-level (go to PA school)

Through the late 90's and up through today there is a CRNA craze...every one wants to be a CRNA

Medical school and dental school have always been competitive.

DO school has increased in popularity and now their stats rival MD.

Will the next decade see an increase in the popularity of podiatry among pre-med types for the reasons below:

*Relatively unknown - not many people apply
*Relatively low admissions standards (not to say Pod school isn't hard)
*Surgical in nature
*Good standard of living (six figure income) if you work hard

I was explaining the field to a classmate the other day and she said she doesn't like feet. I said the average salary for a podiatrist rivals that of primary care physicians and that the income for specialty podiatric surgeons can reach 250k.

Her response: I like feet.

Now average GPA is a 3.3 and the MCAT is a 22-23 (2013)

2020: GPA 3.5 and MCAT 26 avg? This would essentially be as competitive as some DO schools are now.

Is this the right time to get in? Residency issues can be fixed over the next several years and the surgical scope of practice can only be strengthened.

calling out all the psychic premeds out there... let's consult the crystal ball

I think you're forgetting that medicine in general is going down the tube...

When it becomes literally impossible to break 150k because of reimbursement regulations, we'll see how many people apply....

Obamacare is toast. It's rollout is a massive failure with at least half of the states refusing Medicaid expansion....it costs more than expected (go figure)....It will have to be replaced with something else or modified...I don't think medicine's fate is quite sealed.

Could not agree more, if it gets to a point where being a physician one can only max out at 150 at most, I bet these schools will become a lot easier to get into. I do not believe many when they say the salary of doctors has no bearing on their decision (dont get me wrong though 150k is still pretty dam good)

I could see any of these health programs becoming a lot more competitive is if the economy keeps getting bad enough healthcare is about the only safe harbor job wise.

Care to share your premise?

NYCPM just had 100% residency match for the c/o 2013.
