I am in my second year of college as bio major. I took enough hours to graduate after my third year. So, I need to apply this coming summer, but I am not sure if I will be in good shape. I haven't taken DAT yet.. or prepared for it, but planning on taking it sometime during April or May. Also, I am shadowing a dentist and doing volunteer work at local hospital starting this spring semester. I don't have any research experience or leadership positions.. Do dental schools pay lots of attention to those factors?
My overall GPA so far is 3.7, hopefully I can get it up to 3.8 after spring semester. My science GPA is 3.6 right now, but I hope to raise it above 3.7..
Since I am graduating one year early, I could reapply next year.. but I still want to try this year..
Is it better to apply when I am in good shape next year
Is it okay to reapply if I don't get in this year? Do dental schools dislike people reapplying?
Do I not have any chance this year...? 🙁🙁🙁

Since the cycle doesn't even open until June, I'd suggest focusing on your grades and that DAT first, since how you do on your DAT in April or May could answer your question for you.

As for research, I've met plenty of applicants who haven't done any research, but most have some type of leadership experience, whether it is in a sport, a volunteering group, or even a school club, etc, but I don't think it weighs as heavily as your DAT, GPA, and personal statement imo.

I think if you have the DAT scores, go ahead and apply this coming cycle. There doesn't seem to be anything wrong with reapplying - there are plenty of people on predents and SDN who prove that, but you shouldn't be worrying about that right now. 😛

WHOA! slow down 🙂
You are doing well. You can definitely take the DAT sometime this year. It does not need to be before the application cycle starts. keep in mind that this cycle opens on June 1st. If you really plan on applying this year, i would look to start gathering the things that might be a bit tricky to obtain, like the LORs. In the meantime work on your personal statement and try to get involved in some form of research (It does not have to be anything biological - see here for info on experience http://stu-dentdiaries.blogspot.com)
Hey, if you do not get in this cycle you can always apply next cycle. Dental schools do not discriminate against you for multiple trials. they understand that each year it becomes more and more competitive and we only have so many dental schools to accept us all.

Give it a go! and good luck 👍

Just do it whenever you feel ready to.
