Hey everyone, im a dental student at the university of alexandria egypt, am about to start my third year... so far, ive not been doing exactly GREAT.... last year i got a B,the year before a sad D..... anyway, ive just been wondering, now that ortho is out of the way, what im i to do,, finish and dooo what?? exam-wise...?? ive no clue what the DDS NBDS stuff like that mean.... i just neeeeed someone to explain exactly after im done what happens? after my bach, how do i pick which branch i want to specialize at?? and are these exams for anyone out there, can i takem now?

Well someone from Egypt would know what to do better than me, but I suggest you think really hard what you want to do, if you really want to come to the States and what exactly coming here implies.
You need to do the math and see if you can afford all the exams and plane tickets and most importantly the tuition and living costs.
The specialization you need to figure out on your own, nobody can tell you what you like and what you're good at.😉
Good luck.

well sure the States is an option... and money-wise im quite ready, but the thing is is there any concern about the grades??? and how do i apply for this exam? and if i pass, do i start working or do i just specialize?? and if i specialize do they look at my college grades or just my exam,,,, cuz then ortho gets back in the pic...

It depends what are your goals, is it to study and practice dentistry in the US or is it to study in the US then go back to Egypt.

lets suppose i want to study and practice in the US....

Then you have 2 pathways:
1- Join an international program and study in a dental school for 2-3 years to earn a US DDS or DMD degree then you can get licensed in all US states.

2- Join a residency program for 2 years at least then you can get licensed in a few US states.

To apply to an international program you need to take some exams first:
1- Toefl exam.
2- NBDE part I (national board dental examination), you need to get a very high score above 85 which needs hard work.
3- NBDE part II: It is not required by all dental schools but some dental schools require it.

after you take these exams you can start applying to the dental schools, and yes you will study the same things again.

There are many international programs for example:
-Boston University
-New York University
-Upenn
-UCLA
-UCSF
-University of Pacific

you can search for their websites where you will find more info.

I am happy to help you.

wanna tell you Tarek that you shouldn't be worrying that much about GPA

cause it is not everything and some would take some one whose GPA is 2.0

well I have a Question, how can get an acceptance from a university although I don't have a visa to do the NBDE which is only done in the us

if you guys wanna add me and chat about it so we can help each other

if u wanna give nbde..then u hv to take student visa or visitor visa...to apppear in exams.....because it only taken in states.....

hey there Tarek my name is Tarek by the way and i am a graduate from the same school in 2004, about your concerns ...mostly whatever u do in school they are not as relevant as you would think "but you have to pass, don't worry about the GPA and the like"and try to have a decent grade..but other than that the selection relies heavily on the NBDE tests and your USA based experience as well as your post graduate studies...good luck dude i myself applying right now
your game plan should be as follow
1.finish you school as well the residency, get your license
2.take the NBDE tests "both is better but 1 is the least"
3. apply for schools like crazy
4. if money is not an obstacle then go ahead and volunteer at research facilities here or at some dental offices "that would count toward your experience", also some schools offer perceptorship programs they should be helpful

heey Tarek..

thanks man...

so i think u r done with the NBDE right? i mean how was it?

and where are u applying in the US?

best of luck
