NH3 and H2NNH2

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Why is NH3 more basic than H2NNH2 (N2H4 Hyrdazine)

Thanks

NH3 is more basic b/c when it accept an H there are no resonance structures possible.

On the other hand when H2NNH2 accepts an H there is resonance (a plus charge and an adjacent lone pairs). Resonance reduces basicity of amines. Draw out the structure to see it.

Hope that helps
