I have a friend who is a USA trained Family Medicine doc with quite a few years of experience. He is interested in moving to Scotland to practise medicine but is concerned about forced retirement - he is 55 years old right now. Do any of you UK folks know what the situation is now? Are you required to retire at a particular age and would my friend's age make it difficult for him to secure a position within the NHS?

Thanks for your feedback

The official current retirement age is 65. However, whilst most choose to retire at or before this age, you can continue to work beyond this age and I have met family physicians (GPs) who have continued working in the NHS well into their 70s.

Some parts of Scotland have a real shortage of experienced GPs so I can't imagine it will be a problem.
