Has anyone gotten a National Health Service Corps interview yet? It's probably too early in the year, but I wanted to double check.
 
I have not heard anything yet either..the info on the inside of the application packet says April-May. So the way this process has been going so far, I am banking on sometime in October. <img border="0" alt="[Laughy]" title="" src="graemlins/laughy.gif" /> The wait by the mailbox never seems to end!!! Good luck to everyone, please post if you hear anything!
 
This year, the process has been bump back a bit if you haven't notice.... this is due to 8/11 attack on the US.... The NHSC and PHS has been busy and have delayed process of application by about a month.... so don't sweat it.... It will come 🙂

I posted some of the questions that were asked of me somewhere on this site.... So search if you like, otherwise, I'll try and post up questions I can remember....

Start thinking about leadership roles, volunteer work in the underserve.... I found it beneficial for me to bring a CV/Resume of activities I did during my undergrad.... The interviewers were impress b/c one of the questions they ask me was to list activities relating to the underserve, any volunteer, jobs, and research, I did.... so instead of verbalizing it, I handed them my resume and they proceeded to list them and look at them 🙂

Thanks for the information Popoy, I was starting to check my mailbox anxiously. I am glad to know the timetable.
 
In our information booklet, they said they will inform about unterview from April to May. I assume they'd still be on that timetable since apps were still due March 29th. I'm also eagerly checking my mailbox!
 
Keep checking your mailbox! I called the office today and they said that notification letters would go out in the next 2-3 weeks. However, they also said that interviews would be held here (Cleveland) May 5-7, so I guess that we aren't given much warning.

Looks like another plane ticket!!!
 
Are all interviews held in Cleavland? Does anyone know who conducts these interviews? Is it doctors, or a combination of people?
 
Sorry I wasn't more clear. Yes, there are regional interviews; the Cleveland interviews are May 5-7 but I didn't ask about other sites. It sounds as though they will be spread out over the whole month, though, because the teams move from city to city.
 
I have been wondering the same thing too...thank God people posted this. I sent my stuff back in the 1st day I could...and haven't heard anything...
I just finished Neuro yest..and was planning on calling on Monday.

We should post when we hear something!
 
Yup, I'm getting antsy too. You'd think someone somewhere out there has heard back by now... *sigh*
 
alina_s - how did you find out what days the interviews in Cleveland were?
I tried to find out when the interviews in my area were and they siad they couldn't tell me until I received a letter of invitation. They did say that the interview team would be going to 30 different locations and that as of Friday the letters had not gone out yet.
Of course i will still run out and check the mail every day!
 
I got an interview invitation! There are about 30 interview sites, with interviews scheduled for 3 days in a row at each from the beginning of May through the end of June. Good luck.
 
I recieved an invite also! Yea!! The woman on the phone said that they are intervewing aprox. 1,000 people for 320-365 spots. Good Luck, everyone!! 😀
 
Every day I check my mail and then check here to see if anyone got an invitation. So I haven't been truly disappointed until today....sniffle, sniffle.
My husband tried to cheer me up with a song he just threw together about the mail taking too long and getting enough loans so he doesn't have to work to put me through school. Maybe it will come tomorrow!

I just got my invite, too. I'm going to Chicago in Mid-May. Anyone know any details about the interview format? How long it will last? Should we bring anything?

Popoy, thanks for your advice. Since the search function is currently disabled, I couldn't check for any other NHSC listings. Could you give us more advice? What was the interview format like, what kind of ?s did they ask, etc.

yay! i got my invite! turns out my parents said its been in the door since Monday but they never saw it until last night. So the closest place i could get to interview is 3 hours away. oh well, i'm psyched to have gotten the interview though, hopefully all will go well! Anybody else interviewing in Waterville, Maine?
 
Hey everyone! I just got back from my NHSC interview in San Antonio today, and I wanted to give you feedback as to what to expect. I had two interviewers who were very friendly and professional. They read questions from a booklet and then wrote down my answers. Here were some of the questions they asked:

* Tell us about your family and background.
* What kind of environment(s) did you grow up in?
* Who made the decisions in your family?
* What was the biggest hardship that your family had to face?
* Describe your volunteer and work experience.
* Describe a time when you showed leadership skills.
* Describe a time when you had conflict with someone. How was it resolved?
* Where are you going to med school? Why did you choose this school?
* Where do you see yourself 5 years after you finish your training?
* Why are you a good candidate for this scholarship?

Those are just some of the questions... the interview lasted about an hour, and then I stopped to talk to the NHSC guy for a while. No one will hear back until mid-August, apparently.

I got a letter denying me for an interview. I'm a bit disappointed, but I can't say that I'm surprised. I applied for the scholarship for the wrong reasons...purely financial. While I am interested in doing psychiatry for the clinically underserved (yes, they do consider psych as primary care for the scholarship), I think that me not getting the scholarship was the right path. I guess I knew I wouldn't get it all along and maybe that shined through in my application somehow. At any rate, for those of you who did not receive interview letters as of yet, there are pre-interview scholarship rejections coming out...although I hate being the bearer of bad news... <img border="0" title="" alt="[Frown]" src="frown.gif" />
 
I went to Arizona for a May 7th interview. The interviewers were very friendly and just wanted to get to know you as an individual. Some additional questions that were asked:

* Name one time you had to make a decision independent of anyone.
* What does Primary Care mean to you
* Do you have close friends and what are they like
* What are your suggestions for solving the lack of adequate care in third world countries (something to that effect, I don't remeber the exact wording)
* Describe the greatest hardship you've faced thus far
* What is your community like, describe it
* How would you go about resolving a conflict
* Where would you NOT like to practice

Well, these are some of the questions that come to mind. If I remember anymore, I'll be sure to post them. I was told by my interviewer that they read the exact same questions to all interviewees in order to be fair. My only advice: Don't let your nervousness prevent you from showing them your best. I have mine in June also...this feedback is great. I am glad to hear that they went ok. Classmates of mine had said the interviews are non-stressful and laidback...as everyone here is reporting.

I just had my interview today .. here are some of the questions I can remember that (I think) weren't mentioned already:

* Have you experienced any personal or professional setbacks?

* Describe a situation in which you were involved in a personal/family/professional conflict and how the situation was or was not resolved.

* What are your goals in life? (something like that - how broad!)

* Is there any location where you would specifically like to practice?

* What kind of work setting would you prefer? (I think what they meant was .. do you want to work in a hospital, a private practice, etc..)

I think most of the other questions were posted by others. They just read the questions straight out of a book so I bet we all get the same ones! Now.. more waiting...

I had my interview last week and just wanted to encourage everyone else who is still waiting. The only other question that I can think of that wasn't posted was:

Why do some people not have adequate healthcare (or somthing along those lines)?

The interview was very stiff in formal. You are interviewed by two people at once. They first read you this statement that they have to read every applicant. Then my interviewers alternated between asking the questions in this book as they frantically took notes. They have to ask every question and there was a ton of redundancy - they want to make sure they get the same info from each person. But, interviewers were very nice and open dispite the formal questions. I brought my resume with me, but they said that they were not allowed to accept anything like that from students and that I should not refer to it, but should be just come up with everything off of the top of my head. So, you can bring your resume, but the odds are they won't look at it or even let you refer to it.

They also had someone available to answer questions who did not have any bearing on the interview process- make good use of them and ask as many questions as you have. They aslo give you a FAQ sheet and a video to view at home.

Had my interview yest...very laid back and they asked the same questions as mentioned above. Apparently I was told that over the last couple of years they had "standardized" the questions...so everyone is asked the same "25"
I really enjoyed the interview...and am glad I went....

It was weird being in that suit again...waiting to be interviewed....ahh back in the days...makes me happy to be a MSII....

Regarding the video that they handed out, could someone tell me what it said? I remember getting it and putting it in my car, but somehow it magically disappeared and I have yet to see the thing. Did I miss much? Thanks for your help!!

Quick questions for those of you who were invited to interview, or who have gotten the scholarship in previous years. According to your original application:
1. were you an EFN classified student?
2. were you certified as coming from a disadvantaged background?
3. what preference did you put down for the type of service commitment you wanted? (urban, rural or institution?)
4. what region did you select for your long-term practice?

I'm trying to get a better understanding of specific criteria they use, above and beyond "a committment to serving the underserved."

I am not sure what an EFN is....I grew up in NY..about 45 min from NYC...and am a white male....not "disadvantaged" so to speak...
I had my interview earlier this month...and was interested in working in an institution...

From what I got...the primary application was more of a psych screen to see what people are really about and what their true intentions were...then the interview...was just to get to know you and your experiences...

I found it to be oddly plesant...and enjoyable....nothing like interviewing for schools..and waiting for that "thick" envelope in the mail...

We will all find out in Aug...so lets keep our fingers crossed...
 
The results are in...I got the scholarship...
