Night float in ophtho?

Is there blocks of time with night float in ophtho residency??

If so--busy? In house?

Probably not like you are thinking. Rarely, if ever, will a patient be admitted for Ophthalmology so there aren't a lot of patients who are needing to be 'covered' by a night float resident. So there's not a system where you're covering a bunch of hospitalized patients and admitting new patients to the service while everyone else is asleep.

There is plenty of call to go around for Ophtho residents, however. Most programs have home call typically something like 1-2 nights/week and 1-2 weekends/month. Unlike 'night float' you don't get off the next day - if you end up seeing patients all night you still have 25 lined up for resident clinic the next day. A handful of programs actually have an 'Eye ER' and do in-house call which requires adherence to work hour restrictions and so they have protected time off the next day. There are literally just a few of those as far as I know. Call can be pretty busy, unlike many medical students or residents in other fields think. Call intensity varies by program so places that are more trauma-heavy end up having to go in more often. There is also usually one resident assigned to take consults during the day, which once again becomes problematic when there are a bunch of patients in clinic to see as well. So when you page Ophthalmology from the ER because you think someone may have uveitis - remember we aren't all sitting in the lounge waiting for the pager to go off.
