Hello guys,

What kind of call system is implemented in your program? Is it regular calls or night float system? If night float, what is the structure like?
Please let me know. Thank you.

We have the Night Float system as follows:

a. Sunday night - Thursday night (5 nights); NF resident (PGY 1&2)
b. Friday night - PGY 3
c. Saturday night - PGY 1&2 - Depending upon current rotations

Total NF months:
PGY 1&2: 2 months/year
PGY 3&4: none

Average calls per month (other than NF)
a. PGY 1&2: 2/month
b. PGY 3: 1/month (Friday nights only)
c. PGY 4: None!

How many residents in each batch? And do you cover one or two hospitals?
And who covers Saturday and Sunday daytime?

Is there an attending on site supervising the residents during night float or is it just on phone supervision?

My program has the night float system. It is great!

a. Sunday night- Thursday night (NF resident covers)
b. Friday night- PGY1 or PGY2 covers
c. Saturday night- PGY1 or PGY2 covers

NF resident gets Friday and Saturday off. One month of NF as a PGY-1 and PGY-2 at my program. NF resident covers from 8 PM- 8 AM. Short-call resident covers from 4 PM- 8PM.

Average calls/month:
PGY1/PGY2: 2 short-calls per month, 1 overnight call (Friday or Saturday)
PGY3: One Sunday call from 8 AM - 8 PM every 10 weeks
PGY4: No call at all!

I'm at WVU in Morgantown.

6 residents in each class, although that is increasing to 7 next year.

Our night float and call is between the VA and the community hospital. Our university hospital CEO chose to drop the inpatient psych ward.

VA:
Mon-Fri - PGY-1 NF 14h/night
Saturday - PGY-1
Sunday - PGY-2 (also covering consults at the U)

Community Hospital:
Mon-Thu - PGY-2 NF 14h/night
Fri-Sat-Sun - PGY-1

The night float itself isn't bad at the VA. You get a lot of sleep because we're very full and there are a lot of campers on the floor.

Weekend calls at both hospitals are busier, worse at the community hospital.

Our schedule as PGY-1s is pretty brutal and we barely make the 80h/week rule, since we cover an extra 24-30 hours in call almost every weekend. 4 days off/month has also been tricky. After that it's cake.

Are all the interns in your program having difficulty making the 80/wk rule? How about 2nd and 3rd yr? Are you guys able to have most weekends free those years?

2nd and 3rd years are pretty much cake from a call standpoint.
