I know that ER docs have to cover nights shifts because there always has to be a doc in the hospital ER. I have also read in one thread that radiologists have to do the same. Outsourcing is definitely trying to address that (hopefully not too much though!). However, do attending radiologists have to do this or is there schedule strictly m-f 9-5 (with some call of course)?

Thanks

In places where there are residents and fellows, they handle the majority of the overnight duties. In places without, the attendings have to handle the responsibility. Radiology IS NOT a 9-5 job anymore. Expect to work nights and weekends.

It varies. In our community, there are 3 major hospitals. One uses nighthawk after 6pm, still come in for procedures. Another takes call via tele at home. The third decided to be in-house as a strategic competitive measure - each rad takes one week of call (5pm to 7am) at a time, rotating through this along w/ angio/IR, etc. It has been a boon to their business (referring docs love it), and they have won over some mkt share. The tele hosp is considering due to this lost revenue...the nighthawk using hosp is already in trouble $ (way before this). Each grp is about 10 rads.
