I've searched previous threads, but I couldn't find an answer to my question. Anyhow, the IRTA program is supposed to last 1 year--now does that mean exactly 12 months, or is it possible to do a postbac for 9 months or 10 months?

C'mon--at least half the people who post in this sub-forum did an IRTA postbac; at least one of you has to know the answer

The 12 month mark is basically for paperwork purposes. You determine when your last day will be; just let your PI know. Although the PIs prefer someone who can stay awhile, 9-10 months should be ok.

Basically, you are committed to one year unless you get into a graduate school program. Then if you can show them documentation, you can leave as early as you need for school. Also, it is somewhat PI dependent-- ie my PI said its fine if I want to leave at the begining of the summer to take time off if my school starts in the fall.

The PI's deal with this all the time and it is not an issue at all.

It's pretty flexible. But you will want to talk to the PI before starting, in some areas, they actually will want you to commit to *two* years. (NIMH especially)

Good luck!
