I was bored last night and compiled this from publicly available stats from the NIH for FY 2005. Sorry the formatting isn't that great but it seems readable to me. (Grant name, University, # of Funded Pre-doctoral Spots, Total yearly award):

Woo hoo my school is 14!
Well, actually that's not exciting at all.
But where the **** is the Yeshiva univ?

It's there. I bolded it for you. 🙂

No I mean I've never heard of that school.

I guess we can rank the programs based on how much money they get:

that means my top choice, Yeshiva, is in the top 10.

Oh, yeah, point of course well-taken. I wouldn't make this the be-all end-all of any applicant's list (I didn't even put numbers before each school to make it harder to jump to that conclusion). Hopefully it does serve as some sort of useful proxy for how well-put-together a MSTP program is as a whole. Or at least how well-written the grant was that year.

Ha, or maybe just which director is tighter with NIGMS! 😳

You can, but it would be highly misleading, as this only reflects NIH MSTP grant money and doesn't include individual institutional support and graduate program training grants, from which you will derive support.

Also, I have no data, but I would suspect that the order fluctuates considerably from year-to-year, as programs come up for review and grant renewal.

I love when this list comes out, but it takes a well trained NIH junky to slosh through all of the confusing .nih.gov sites and then extract all the relevant data. Shatterstar is such a nice guy, I wish I knew which mstp nice, smart, really cool guys like shatterstar end up at.

I would have said "nice, smart, really cool guys like shatterstar end up at" Penn, but you're there aren't you! :meanie:

Methinks CaipirinhaQuinho has had one too many Caipirinhas. While we're on the topic of NIH Grants, I wonder if NIGMS would care to know just how much of ours gets spent in Atlantic City! :scared:

Anyway, Merry Christmas all!

I was wondering whether overall funding totals are really the best way to evaluate the programs' finances. As mentioned, institutional and other sources of funds are not considered by NIH MSTP funds alone.

But also, it's worth noting that not all programs have the same # of students. There is a strong correlation in the MSTP funding and the # of students in the program and it's not true that programs aim to be as big as possible.

I think a better way to interpret the data is to divide the total NIH funding by the number of students in each program. Ideally, you'd also want to account for cost of living differences because I think they factor into how much funding is awarded.

Still, I think the $$ is an incomplete way to compare schools. I would LOVE to see the NIH MSTP panel evaluations of the various programs since it's so hard to get "independent" analysis. I found the funding data, but could not find the program evaluations on the NIH website. Does ANYONE know how I can see them? It would be a BIG help for me to make my decision.

Just for clarity for everyone else reading, the numbers in this post are the number of FUNDED spots. I can see what you mean, but I'd also think that all programs would want as much money as possible. I don't think we can say (without someone in the study section being present) if they take into account the number of TOTAL students in the MSTP when awarding the grant. I would think not. That is, my bet is they review the grant and award $ based on its merits, not its aspirations. If anyone else has more info I'd be very interested.

Let me know if you find them. Probably only high-up administration involved in the process at the school see the evaluations of the grants, if it's like anything else NIH does. Even then, those would only be evaluations of the grant as written, not of the MD/PhD program as a whole.

And it's also worth mentioning that different programs deal with the unfunded spots differently. At some programs, like my alma mater Cincinnati, all of the spot are 100% funded, either by the NIH or the dean's office. (Actually, some of the non-NIH funded spots at UC actually have a higher stipend, but I digress.) At other programs, the unfunded spots cover only partial tuition, or have lower stipends, or whatever. You can't get that info from such a list, you have to actually contact the programs.

Sorry to revive this thread from the dead, but I found it really interesting. Has anyone gone back and redone this list in the last few years? If not, would someone mind pointing me to how to look up this information?

Edit: Nevermind, found NIH RePort. Browsed through most of the top grants and they appear to be roughly the same as the top list (2005). I'm guessing with money cuts there hasn't been much opportunity for the size of these grants to expand in the last couple of years....

I find it particularly interesting how small these grants are compared to the money needed to support them. Clearly, the the MSTP grants are only a small fraction of the funding needed for most of these programs. Despite this though the grant sizes do mostly correlate with the size of the programs.... not sure what to make of it all. I like to think this is a better method of ranking mstp's because my school did well 🙂

I had always heard that grant $$ are largely based on how big the program is when the grant application is turned in... so then bigger programs would usually fair better, right? Not to knock your program of course 😎
