Hi all,

I was wondering what would be the best option for me to get into dental school? My dream school would be the research-heavier schools (UCSF, Harvard)!!

I received an offer to work in a lab at the NIH--specifically NIDCR (National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research) as a Post-bac IRTA. I am so happy about this opportunity, and it is near home so I can save lots of money while working there.

Before the NIH offer, I was going to work at a cancer research lab at a university far from my home. The PI is a family friend of ours and she is extremely accomplished (she graduated Johns Hopkins Med), and she guaranteed my name on publications. I know she will be SUPER supportive of me and will probably write me the best recommendation to dental schools.

I have to choose one and I'm so torn. The pay is the same. Although I would love working for her and know she will push every buttons to connect me well within the medical community, I have lots of experience in a medical research lab, and none in dental. Another thing is that I don't know anyone in this
new city, and would have to support myself with the wage of a research technician (zip).

You definitely cannot go wrong with NIH on your resume, it is close to my home, and it is a dental lab (and I am applying to dental schools!). There are no publications involved though, which I think dental schools really may value, and the NIH-PI would probably not give me as much attention as my family friend PI would.

What would be best in the long run in your opinion!?
