Hey everyone,

I was wondering if anyone at the NIH took a third year for their post bac. When I came to the NIH I was unsure where I wanted to take my career but have since decided to pursue an MD degree. I took the MCAT in January and am planning on applying to medical school over the summer but my second year contract runs out in September so I am going through the process of requesting a third year.

If anyone has any experience with requesting a third year please let me know!

The person who I took over for did three years. Both you and your PI should want it, there’s some paperwork, and it has to be approved by the higher ups from my understanding. Talk to your PI about it, he/she should know what’s next.

I'm currently on my third year. Usually, the PI must request it under the premise that you are continuing work on an on-going project. I don't know how common they are among the institutes but usually you just need your PI to back you.
