NIH Residency?

Though I'm definitely a bit too early in the game for this question, I'm curious at how well NIH residencies are regarded for academic attending positions. I'm doing an NIH GPP for graduate school and will be pursuing an MD after my PhD. This leaves me at some risk of student loans for the MD, but thankfully the NIH offers a really attractive loan forgiveness program. Beyond that, the NIH seems perfect for a life as a physician-scientist, but I can't seem to find a whole lot of information about their residency programs. The only threads I could find here were from back in 08. Does anyone have any experience with the program? How competitive are the residency programs to begin with?
