Hi all,

I will be graduating this summer and I am looking at a summer internship at the moment. I know NIH IRTA is available to graduating seniors but I really am looking for only a summer internship at the moment. Not sure but can a graduating senior still apply to the NIH SIP (summer) program?

Thanks!

"Eligibility: The Summer Internship Program is for students who are at least sixteen years of age or older at the time they begin the program. To be eligible, candidates must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. U.S. citizens are eligible to apply if they are enrolled at least half-time in high school or an accredited college or university as undergraduate, graduate, or professional students. Students who have been accepted into an accredited college or university program may also apply. Permanent residents must be enrolled in or have been accepted into an accredited institution in the U.S. to be eligible."

So it looks like you need to be enrolled or matriculating by the fall of the year you want to join, meaning if you're taking a gap year where you won't be enrolled in anything, you probably can't, but you could try emailing them (https://www.training.nih.gov/contact - ctrl+f "SIP") and seeing if they'll make an exception.

Yes, a graduating senior can still apply to the summer programs. I'm applying myself, and spoke to a training director and researcher from the NIH a couple weeks ago who both confirmed that.

So for future applicants who may be reading this post, just wanted to update. I contacted one of the directors of the NIH SIP program and he said that yes graduating seniors are eligible. He said that you are eligible so long as it has been 2 years since you graduated from college.
