Nitrite, Nitrate, Nitta wha?

Sorry its late and I'm getting delirious from too much DAT for one day. I can't seem to get all the -ate, and -ite, straight. Can someone help me out with the hypochlorate, sulfate, and watever else that's -ate and -ite, or any other suffix I'm missing that we should recognize.

Nitrate = NO3 -
Nitrite = NO2-
Sulfate = S04 2-
Sulfite = SO3 2-

can some one add to this list. That's all I know off my head at 1am.

ClO4^- Perchlorate
Remember, hypo and per are used for less and more oxygen resp. Similarly, 'ite' = less & 'ate' = more Oxygen.

this may sound stupid to you, but i remember "ate" is in "i ate more" so the one with "ate" always has more 🙂 .

don't forget that when you turn those into acids - the "ite" turns into "ous" and the "ate" turns into "ic"

HClO - hypochlorous acid
HClO2 - chlorous acid
HClO3 - chloric acid
HClO4 - perchloric acid

HCl - hydrochloric acid
