Hello, I have been accepted to the Biology Masters Programs at NJIT and Montclair. I'm having a hard time finding alums who can advise me, so I decided to post for some advice here.

While NJIT and Montclair are not the best schools, I know that they are solid state schools. But which has an edge for dental school?

I like that NJIT students can take courses at Rutgers and UMDNJ (med/dental classes are closed, but familiarizing myself with the university itself isn't a bad thing). My undergrad research study was oral health and body image, so I hope to continue that as a grad student.

Any UMDNJ NJMS/NJDS folks know classmates who are alums at NJIT or Montclair? Thanks for your time!

I don't know any but maybe you could call the schools (NJIT & Montclair) and ask them to give you some info on Alumni who eventually went on to UMDNJ?
I think they would help you out, if you explain that your trying to decide between the two.

NJIT is by far the better choice in your situation.

They have many collaborative programs with Rutgers and UMDNJ, you answered yourself in your own post.

Good luck.

I can't speak for MSU but I worked at NJIT for three years and noticed they have several programs/courses that are in conjunction w/ UMDNJ. Since UMDNJ is right down the street you should have plenty of opportunity to network and take advantage of some of the programs that they may offer.

Rutgers has a linkage program to UMDNJ. Call their pre-health office about options for UMDNJ Dental. It's a small office but they're very helpful and I was successful with it. 973 353 5705

As far as education goes, NJIT and Rutgers have better facilities than Montclair state, which is somewhat isolated from access to NYC and Newark. I consider this area more of the academic hub of NJ (aside from New Brunswick/Parsippany of course). From what I saw as a post-bacc at Rutgers Newark there is also lot more going on with researchers visiting from abroad.

Rutgers Newark just built a new facility full of fresh bio labs, I think it's 8 stories or so and very nice.

Don't get intimidated by the laissez-faire admin at these state schools. I think its a much better move to enter a masters at a place that has multiple facilities and programs (NJIT and Rutgers) that interact between institutions than one that sits on its own (Montclair State). Call the depts, go visit, just don't give the impression that you're using them as a stepping stool to dental school.

PM me if you need any advice.
