i need some advice! i am a nj resident, was planning on going to umdnj-njms, but just found out a few days ago that i got off the waiting list at tufts. obviously at nj i will be saving over 100k... how good is tufts reputation? how much better will my chances be at getting a good residency? is there anyone that attends these schools that can give me some idea of what they think about the curriculum? (i know both have good clinical experience) i have until june 11 to decide but would really like to decide NOW rather than keep people waiting. any ideas?
😕

if you want to do primary care, NJMS is a better choice, because it costs less and has better clinical training. however, if you want to specialize or go into academic medicine, tufts does have a significantly better reputation and match list, so it might be worth the extra money to go there. boston's a better location than newark, but of course if you're in newark, you're right next door to NYC.
both schools have free student-run health clinics. i think tufts is a bit more liberal and njms is a bit more conservative, but i don't think that will really make any substantial impact on your education.
i don't know, tough choice . . . good luck.

I think NJMS is a solid school that will let you specialize later with no problems. Tufts is also a good school, but I don't think the difference in reputation is enough to justify the extra $100,000. It might depend on where you eventually want to practice or do your residency. NJMS has a very good reputation locally, and I don't think going to Tufts would give you a very big advantage.

Of course, if you'll be much happier going to school at Tufts, then the extra $100,000 might be justified to you. Good luck with your decision.

If you were to call someone up tomorrow and tell them where you were going to med school where would you be *excited* to talk about?

For me I would go to UMDNJ because there is no way someone could convince me the price difference is worth it. I believe wherever you go you can succeed with hard work. However, the two schools are pretty different - UMDNJ is highly traditional, Tufts somewhat progressive in its examination of 'alternative medicine' for example, UMDNJ really is aimed at producing primary care physicians for NJ, Tufts has a much better reputation and tends to angle towards specialties more, UMDNJ is in Newark, Tufts is in Boston - two very different living situations! So I think Tufts is from my perspective better (I think its rep is better and I think it has a much better location) but at $100,000 difference that would be a tough pill to swallow....

TUFTS All THE WAY! Go to the school that has the better reputation...

i know someone who just left to go to the tufts mba/md program.
he was a nj resident and was gonna go to umdnj till he got the call from tufts.
he says its the best decision he ever made academically and for the future, not to mention being in boston
good luck

I would say NJMS as well. Tufts is a great school but so is NJMS and the money difference is also a huge deal. My biggest mentor at UCLA went to NJMS and he did his residency at UCLA and his fellowship at Harvard. He is also one of the major power players over here at UCLA and is in academic medicine as well. So I think it all depends on which school you could see yourself being happy with during and after. But I agree with the majority that NJMS would be the better way to go.
