A few questions....

How long is the drive from Pendleton to NMCSD (with and without traffic)?

When is traffic the worst on I-5 and I-15?

What are the safe and unsafe parts of the city?

What are good spots in suburbia north of the city?

Thanks

It's California so there is always traffic. I would plan on at least an hour drive depending on which way you are going and what time of day it is. There are no "bad" areas in San Diego just expensive and slightly less expensive. There are some nice beach communities between NMCSD and Pendleton - Encinitas, Carlsbad, Solana Beach. It all depends on how much you want to pay for rent.

I am from San Diego and would be happy to answer any more questions you have.

Are you part of a couple working at both places? If so, a couple of things to know, its 15 min from the main gate to the hospital at Camp Pendleton and a little further from the eastern gate (can't remember the name). Living off the 15 will mean nearly an hour commute to Camp Pendleton from anywhere. Living along the 5 is the better, but more expensive option and there really aren't any bad communities along there (claremont is probably the least desirable but ain't that bad). Traffic is worst at the expected times. The "merge" is where the 5 and 805 come together and traffic backs up there going north in the afternoon. If you want access to both, you'll probably both drive 45 min+. This isn't such a good idea if you are about to be a sleep deprived intern.

Fallbrook gate is the east gate.

Also not a bad place to live for either spot: nice and quiet, very agricultural. The traffic from Temecula to SD in the morning is pretty wicked at normal commute times, but not too bad (compared to LA/OC) early in the morning.
Oceanside has some decent cheap areas.
Dont live in SD areas of: National City, Lemon Grove, La Mesa, Imp Beach, San Ysidro, and some of Chula Vista.
