I have received 10 II's, attended 7 and have not received any acceptances yet-- just 1 WL and 1 MD WL after an MSTP interview. I'm starting to get worried, especially seeing people with multiple acceptances already 🙁 I was really hoping I would hear back from my October interviews before Christmas (people have already heard from some of those schools) but nothing.

I know MSTPs are slower than MD-only but when should I start thinking about looking for a job for next year and reapplying? I know I'm being premature but wondering if I need to start planning a back-up just in case.

You have 3 more interviews to attend and four more decisions pending- I wouldn't worry yet. I'm sure you'll get at least one acceptance.
If for some reason I'm wrong, remember that the MSTP applicant pool is very limited, and each applicant can only go to one place, so your chances to come off waitlists are actually pretty good.

Fewer MD/PhD programs do rolling admissions so that leads to later decisions, I know my program does one interview in October, one in November and one in January and doesn't send out any decisions until after the January interview.

Also, with most programs only taking a handful of students each year they can't play statistics like they do with a med school class. So a program that only takes 5 students will usually only give out 5 acceptances at a time. My experience and the experiences of my classmates is that there is a lot more wait list movement because of this. I received my acceptance from the program that I am in in June and I wasn't the only one in my class that got their acceptance in June. So it is much too early to freak out.

It would be cool if MD/PhD programs across the country used a match system like Texas does for its MD programs. Not sure about the programs themselves, but for applicants it would definitely make the process a lot easier.

Yeah definitely...would really help cut down on the ridiculous spring/summer movement, where some people only have a week or two to secure housing etc before classes (or mandatory summer rotations) start.

Thanks guys. I'm mostly wondering what kind of gap year programs I could start looking into, since it would suck to get to June or even March and not have anything lined up.

From a program director (PD) standpoint, it would be the best strategy. Before PD for MD/PhD, I was an Associate PD for a residency that went thru the NRMP match and a PD for a fellowship (still am) that did not go thru the NRMP match. I can assure you that I would be advantageous from the standpoint of applicants and PDs. If you did not fill, you could go thru the "scramble"... which is remains highly regulated.

Most MD/PhD PDs have not been PDs of residencies as they are primarily bench scientists. In my case, for many years, I was 50/50.

For the OP, I PM you...

I've one more MD/PhD interview left in January and no acceptances, multiple WL as well. Looking forward to February, I guess.

I'm a huge proponent of backup plans. I had decided that I would only apply for med school once, so I was applying for post docs at the same time that I was applying for med school. Like you said, it sometimes takes a while to get a good job lined up. Plus, if you do get offered a job after you've been accepted to med school, you can always decline it.

All that being said, I agree with everyone else that it's way too early to panic. Finish the rest of your interviews, and try not to get too caught up in the mass hysteria. :luck: to you. 🙂

I'm in the same boat OP-- no acceptances yet. Keep in mind that a lot of schools have small programs and so try very hard not to over-accept early in the game. I think a lot of schools should also finish interviewing around January, so that will mean decisions!

Great thread... I'm on the same boat, approximately a dozen interviews (MD-PhD and MD), 1-post interview MD-PhD/MD rejection from a school I thought I did well on the interview and a ton of waiting... I had all my interviews late in the cycle, but I thought I'd have more replies by Christmas as well. I haven't heard back from any other program and I'm freaking out right now. I wonder if the silences from schools that have already started accpeting MSTP students are just waitlists. If so I have not secured a single acceptance yet... I had one MD school tell me I was put in the pile for re-review in January. I assuem I will hear back from several by the end of January.... I have 3 interviews left in 2013. Arrrrg... the wait is killing meee!

I know that feeling, Wiz. I'm in the same position, literally.
