First NYU, now Temple!
I asked at UCLA and UCSF and it's already in the talks to terminate the advanced placement program and other universities are expected to follow. It seems that we only have this year or maybe one more to get in! What will we do if we don't get in?????
There is already so much competition and such less seats. Is there any way to make my application stronger??
I want to be a dentist in AMERICA! It's my dream!

If you notice, NYU's advanced standing prog. was 3 yrs and Temple also had 3 yr prog. It make sense for both these schools to terminate the prog and have candidates join their regular 4 yrs program.
I think next in line might be Nova univ. who have 3 yrs prog as well. Makes no sense for foreign trained dentists to study same thing again for 3 yrs.
NYU and Temple were the last choices for everyone, mostly because they were 3 yrs course.
Never heard of UCLA and UCSF terminating their program, thats a news. What is your source of information?

yeah, but NYU only closed down because it wasn't comfortable with the Pass/fail system. Temple is surprising because even if they were last choices, it's not that people weren't taking them. Is the UCLA, UCSF news credible? because if it is, then it's really worrying

I have friends in UCLA and UCSF who have told me that it was mentioned by the staff there that the program will shut down soon!! It is really heart breaking and I hope everyone gets in, but the reality is that to get into an advance placement program you have to be among the top 100 in 15000 applicants. It is very competitive!!
I have taken the part 1 and will take the part 2 soon. I took professional help for my personal statement and supplementary applications. Doing observership right now. Does anyone have any further suggestions on how I can make my application stronger?

from what I have heard UCSF wont shut its program anytime soon. UCLA, Rutgers and howard might shut it in the next 2-3 years

It is true that many schools are following in NYU's footsteps and increasing the size of the regular program at the expense of the advance placement program. They know that those who want to practice in America will even opt for a 4 year program even though it costs a lot more (more money for them).
From what I hear UCSF has taken only applicants with a US residential status this year. Either way everyone should apply with the strongest application they can. Use your time efficiently and what ever resources you have available- It beats wasting money and not getting in!

These news are just rumors, and I don't belive anyone should get panicked. The programs that closed still made provision for the international applicants to apply only they increased the no of years. In fact UMICH is increasing their seats this year. So don't worry. If something closes, other things will open up.

It would be a foolish thing to say that joining a 4 yr course is same as 2 yr IDP course. Even if schools make such a provision, it is useless. After NYU closed their IDP, there is no NYU IDP thread on SDN anymore and I doubt any international dentist applied for their regular 4 yr course.
Umich has not given any updates on increasing their seats, but even if they do it would be 2-4 seats increase max, now compare that with 125 seats gone with NYU.

Dont really know how foolish it is, but for sure, less foolish then sitting idle minded, commenting something without facts and adding to people's misery's, who are already in much anticipation of getting into dental schools this year. I am totally with you on how NYU had made their program lengthy, but no maam/sir its not useless. NYU before calling off their "official ITDP program" was always of three years and never two years. Again people are not foolish to apply there, inspite it being three or four years. Its a good school and applicants who lives on east coast with families, are willing to go there. Last year so many people gave part 1 and part 2 along with DAT just to get into NYU. I am not at fault if someone didnt bring that to your notice. Umich didnt mention last year that they increased their seats from 8 to 10, untill the day of interview. The seats for the ITDP program in US, were always less than the no of applicants applying, but its a situation you should have well thought about before living your country. Isn't the picture same in your country for getting into specialization or even dentistry? Atleast it was in my country. What's the point crying over something that not in your hand and creating a chaos in a unrest world. Rather focus yourself, boast your moral and think positively. Dont underestimate yourself and always be ready for the hard work and the fierce struggle. With right kind of attitude no matter how many schools shut down their programs , you will still get in and achieve your dreams.
