So I have a tech who had requested a day off and didn't get it. So she said a week in advance that she could not work it. Then later in the week she said she could and she went back and forth about whether or not she could work. Anyway, the tech did not show up for her shift and did not call.

Earlier in the week, I told one of the other techs to just cover the shift but then the original one said she could work so this tech refused to cover it. It was obvious that the original tech was available to work because she was trying to negotiate shorter hours. Also her reason for not going in was to study for an exam. The pharmacy is only open until 6pm on weekends!

Is this a no call no show even though it was known that she might not show up? Would you write her up for it?

I'm only the staff pharmacist and the PIC wants me to write her up can I even do that? Also, why couldn't they just f***ing listen to me and have the one tech cover instead of being petty b****es?

That's pretty harsh not letting a tech request a day off in the first place.
Did you try to reach out to her when she didn't show up? Last time this happened I was rebuked for not attemping to call the tech in.

She had 20 requests between oct/nov and she got pretty much all of the other ones. Also I don't make the schedule. I wasn't even working but I was contacted by another technician who says there was an attempt.

I’m sure the PIC owns a pen and can write the tech up themselves. In a private pharmacy I would fire the tech but corporate can be more burdensome a process to solve problems

1. Yes, this is easily a “no-call/no-show”
2. If you weren’t on duty, why is the write-up your responsibility?
3. Whether you can write up someone depends on your company structure
4. It sounds as though there is a serious leadership issue where you work
5. If this tech isn’t fired, then at least the scheduler should stop scheduling her for shifts

I wouldn't do it

Tell your PIC to do the dirty work himself. I have been in your shoes and have had PICS tell me to talk to techs and reprimand them. If you want your PIC to stop using you as a puppet then you have to stand up. Remember, the PIC gets paid more and should deal with this.

Thanks for the replies! Turns out I don't have the power to do a write up as a staff pharmacist. I'm not sure why my manager wanted to push the responsibility on to me.

The only way I can get techs to listen to me is by bribing them with stuff every week. I bring them candy, snacks, coffee, lunch every week. Writing them up won't do anything, they will just quit and work somewhere else.

Seriously?

Not at our store, I don't buy things for them unless birthdays or staff meeting. If you are afraid they will quit after coaching then they don't respect you. At the moment, I have 2 techs on LOA so 6 techs from other stores are helping me. A few of them want me to consider them if I ever have an opening. That shows my techs they can be replaced if they don't perform. BTW, our techs are good in general.

It's the manager's job to write the tech up, not yours. They probably deserve to be written up but let's be honest, they are probably getting paid minimum wage to work in some miserable pharmacy, and school comes first.

If techs don't listen or can't do the job, cut their hours or give them crappy shifts or clopeners or just railroad them out. What job prospects are there really for bad retail techs?

If you have a "super tech" I'm sure they are valuable but most are average and expendable. It's just annoying to start from scratch

Anyone with "20" time off requests in 2 months doesn't really want to work so don't put them on the schedule?

For all the old crappy techs I've rid myself of, if they got hired somewhere else it's because whoever hired them didn't ask me to give them the real scoop

Lol. Sounds about right.

Some places, like Kroger (I guess it depends on the state since techs are union here), you cannot just schedule who you choose.

Like I've said before working in chain retail with union techs must be the WORST. I hear it all the time with Kaiser outpatient..
