Uggggghhhh... I still don't have a DO LOR. I have calls out to 3 DOs and still no word.

I was hoping to find that file that lists all the DO schools and which ones require/strongly recommend a DO letter. That way, I can apply to atleast one or two now that place lest weight on the LOR. Can anyone help me find that file/list, or does anyone even know what I am talking about?

I still highly recommend getting a DO LOR. Most DO schools require or recommend a DO LOR and the other ones more then likely will prefer one.

agreed. i will get a DO LOR, but i kinda want to apply to one or two schools now with out one because it could be a while until I get one. That way I am still sort of early at a school or two.

Do you think shadowing and getting a letter from a DO in May before applying is too late?

For this cycle? It's way too late. For next years cycle it fine.

Why would getting a letter in May be too late? What school has even reviewed an application in May or made a decision on an applicant. If we're talking about May 2011 for this cycle, then obviously that's way too late since its past deadlines, but if we're talking about getting a letter this past May or even now, what's the harm? It would only help.

Just upload it and send it to schools once you get it.

If you're applying for the next cycle, it's fine.

I got mine in October or November of the cycle--I applied during 2009, got the letter in October of 2009.

Obviously, the sooner, the better. Applying earlier always works in your favor. But I just don't want you to think that because you didn't already line the letter up, that it's too late. And just because you haven't spent the last 4 years shadowing them doesn't mean the letter won't do the trick. Of course, that helps too. I was really concerned about the letter, and didn't really know how to approach obtaining one. But, most DO's had to go through the process themselves, understand, and are very willing to help.

I called his office, and left a message. When he called back, I was very clear about my intentions---if you wait until October you can't really hope and pray they offer---and he said we could spend a day together in office and see how it goes.

I know a few that called the office and asked directly about a letter, and just talked the DO that wrote their letter almost interview style for maybe an hour.

Wow, I thought that method was just plainly too blunt. lol.

I won't have any time or opportunity to shadow a DO until I graduate because of my location. I thought the letters had to be ready by the time you submitted your primaries to be "complete".

Thanks for the clarification.

Just be aware this won't work for all schools. For example, I've worked around one DO minimally in the hospital while doing clinicals for school, but he couldn't let me shadow him because there were too many med students. We met for quite a while and he offered to write me a letter. DMU emailed me back that it wouldn't count because it didn't describe clinical exposure enough. (and this is a DO that was on their adcom previously 😕)

Luckily I've got one other DO letter from shadowing already in Interfolio so I sent that to them today. I sure hope he specifically mentioned my shadowing (he was also previously a DMU adcom). I didn't realize they scrutinized the letters so much.
