I am from North Carolina and there are currently no DO schools here. I know that optometry schools do hold in-state slots for students from states that do not have optometry schools. Are there any DO schools that also do this?

VCOM gives preference to VA and NC schools. I would try WVSOM too since NC is an appalachian state.

If you are concerned about tuition, UMDNJ-SOM allows ALL students to get NJ resident status which significantly lowers the cost of attendance (from 31K to about 20K). If you're concerned more about just getting in then I don't know of any other schools that help you out. UNC chapel hill is an amazing bargain I hear if you can get in though.

Good luck!

DOctorJay, is this for first year students too?

Ohio University COM also grants in-state residency after M1. Also be aware of that schools 5 year post-grad work commitment.

How can they force your to 5 year post-grad work commitment? If you don't follow this does this mean that you would have to pay out of state tuition?

Post-grad would include residency?

Yes, if you don't do the 5 years, you have to pay back the tuition break.

As I understand it, the 5 years is only includes residency if you do a DO residency in Ohio, in a primary care field, at one of their CORE hospitals.

ABSOLUTELY, this is for ALL students. If for some reason you don't get your act together in the first year you can change your second year, of course no one in their right mind would do that but it is allowed. I believe around 90% of my first year classmates are now NJ residents with the remainder trying to finish up their requirements to attain the status.
