Hi everyone,
I don't post much here, but I lurk around, and all the information has been helpful, so I'm hoping that you guys might have some advice or input for me.
cGPA = 3.50 with strong upward trend from freshman year grades
sGPA = 3.40 with lots of upper level biology and psychology courses as well as courses in Spanish, art history, and literature (some of my other interests 🙂)
MCAT = 30 (8 physical/10 verbal/12 biological)
I think I have pretty decent extracurriculars, but I'm not sure!
- Volunteer nursing assistant with a family practice clinic for two summers (took vital signs, interviewed patients for medical history, performed shots and EKGs with supervision from nurses, and supervised a high school students as she took vital signs)
- Research examining the interplay between cytokines and estrogen in penetrative brain injury in zebra finches, which has direct implications for human traumatic brain injury patients (no publications or presentations though, and I had a falling out with my PI, so I don't have a LOR to show for it)
- Vice president of my college's Women in Science club for one year and intern for one semester with the American Association of University Women in their Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) Programming Department (women in science is extremely important to me, and I've emphasized that I would like to build or contribute to a community such as this in med school)
- Stepped up as chair of my college's pre-med society's fundraising committee due to lax leadership from the previous chairs and helped plan a pillow fight fundraiser in just a month
- Currently working full time as a medical screener with a plasma donation facility, taking basic vital signs, communicating with donors information about their health, etc. This experience has been important to me because I've had the chance to work with many underserved/uninsured individuals and teach their about their health
Awards: Graduated cum laude; Dean's List 4 semesters; recipient of a research grant through my college; member of Psi Chi (international honor society for psychology)
LORs: committee letter written by one of my professors (biology), 1 from another biology professor, 1 from the head of the biology department, 1 from a professor I had in psychology who was also a fellow student in an upper level bio class, and 1 from the doctor I worked with (this one worries me because I know it's short, but this is because I actually worked with patients instead of just shadowing the physician and didn't get to know her all that well)
Sorry about this super long post, but I'm concerned about the lack of interview invites I've had thus far (verified 07/16; complete secondaries at most schools end of July/early August) and would really like some input about where I stand.
