Ok...I'm really stressed... I applied to 3 schools last year and was an alternate at 2 of them. This year I applied to 8 schools and I haven't gotten a single interview invitation ! And its already the middle of December ! Wow. I didn't think it would be like this.... I have an average DAT/GPA and I have research experience, lots of volunteer work, leadership roles, and 2 years experience as a dental assistant. What is going on ???? I was just rejected by a one of the schools I was an alternate for last year....ouch that hurt.
Does anyone have any ideas ??? thanks 🙂

It's ok. Try to calm down a bit. You still have a shot. But just realize that whatever happens, there's worse that could happen. Unfortunately, life is like that--most of the time, it's never ideal.

It's just a matter of perspective--
*Some want to get into Harvard Law school --and they fall apart when they don't
*Some simply try to get a GED--and they are very happy once they get it
*Some are struggling to live--they are born with a hereditary condition.

Try your best. That's all you can do. My $.02.

What exactly were your stats, if you don't mind.

For some people, life is an easy ride, but for some other people, life is tough. Can somebody tell us why?😴

I work in a dental office with a girl that just got accepted to our state dental school-her first school, her first try. She has a 3.8 gpa in basketweaving from a school with a pretty good reputation, her parents are both dentists and they are LOADED, and she's also a "minority". She comes to work and doesn't lift a finger. Everyone talks s@%^ about her because she gets paid to stand around and read magazines or text msg all day. No initiative or common sense whatsoever. Oh, did I mention she has worked with us for almost 5 months and she still hasn't caught on that teeth are numbered ? Unbelieveable. She has it made in the shade. Yes, life is much easier for some than others. 😕

People like this are usually filtered out. Unless she really has some sort of work ethic, she won't make it past the first year. But I can see the frustration. Some people think getting into d-school isn't that bad (either naturally brilliant, or have some sort of connection); while people like me want it so bad, nothing will get in our way until we get that acceptance letter(s). My only advice is to hang tough and keep at it. Things will go your way sooner or later.

Without your vital statistics, it will be quite difficult for anyone to give you any useful advice other than to never give up.

Quit whining about your "minority" coworker. You want to be a dentist then go get it with hard work and discipline. I bet that most SDN'ers would like to have a nice easy ride into D-school, but we ain't all that lucky.

Sadly, not always or usually the case. Nepotism and other issues with dentistry are fairly rampant, and most schools will do just about anything to "help along" a student who is almost trying to fail out nowadays.

I know exactly what the OP means though, but to give hope, not too long ago an SDNer just got in on her 3rd try. I work together with a lot of predental students. all in all in my city, I personally know well over 50, and I wouldn't want a good half of them to work on my teeth, but a lot of those who probably shouldn't get in (in my opinion) will while others who really deserve it are left in the dust.

Perfect example: guy I know who pretty much told me he is going into dentistry to make money and use it to get girls and be able to marry a 20 year old model when he turns 40 will be going to dental school next year with a huge scholarship...also is a minority (like me). Meanwhile, a middle class white male with no dental connections in the family I know who is probably the nicest guy in the world, helped his little brother realize and work on his alcoholism, worked as a dental assistant for 3 years at a periodontist, knows more about dentistry than 95% of predents, awesome grades and average DAT scores, worked as a medical assistant for years, an orthopedic therapy assistant for years, etc. has applied 6 times with only 1 interview and 0 acceptances. It's too bad we don't have an e-meter that can measure who has their heart in the right place for going into this field, because we're losing a lot of really great potential dentists with the system we got now.

hey lovely me,
I totally understand what you feel! I was in the same position as you are and totally ready to give up but guess what, let me tell you something miracle does happen!! just relax and face problems as a way to grow up. Believe that if this is what you really want, someday you will get it. Think of it as if it's easy to get, people take it for granted. The harder it is to get, the more people will appreciate it later on. So my suggestion is cheer up and live life to the fullest. I'm sure you'll be fine! 🙂

Good luck

Amen! Got a dream go get it. Don't let no one tell you that you CAN'T not even you.

Try not to worry about, think of a backup plan and how you can improve your application. Last year I applied to about 5 schools very late, interviewed at one and was placed on the alternate list. Didn't make it in, so I started Graduate School.

I re-applied earlier this year to more schools, and haven't got any interviews yet. If I don't get in this time, I'm going to retake my DAT's this summer, hopefully get good grades to reflect my performance in Grad School and reapply again. My GPA was a little below average, my DAT was right on average, and I had plenty of experience shadowing, volunteering etc.

I'm not going to let it get me down, I AM going to dental school. If not now, next year, if not then, I'll keep trying year after year. A year really isn't that much of difference, enjoy undergrad/grad or whatever you are doing now while you can because you'll never be able to come back to that level.

I figured I'll have a masters and a PhD by the time I get to Dental School 😀

Best of luck!

Take it from me- you definately have a shot. I was in the same boat as you- Waitlisted, then the following year had to wait until February 24th to get in, you will probably sneak into a class somewhere. The beauty of dental school is that once you do get in whether its in december or the end of july... youll be on an even playing field. Give yourself some time- this profession is too good to pass up. Dental school is a great time!

If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all. Thanks JMJRDH1.

The first part of my response was genuine. Give some stats or some idea as to what your particular problem is, and then ideas can be given to you.

The second part? I am sick of people whining about others good fortune.

if you keep at it you will eventually get in. even though two years right now seems like a slow long time, in the long run that's nothing when you have a career. apply to more schools next time and raise your DAT scores. if you want enough to be a dentist you will make it happen.😉

It is time to get off of your high horse....
if you don't want to hear "whining" then look at another thread....you saw the title ! Thanks 🙂

If dentistry is something that you love and want to do for the rest of your life, I would hope that you would work your butt off every year to better your stats and application. Maybe ask the schools what you could do to set yourself apart from the other applicants. Look at your top schools mission statements and apply them

I applied 14 and had only one interview so far. Don't worry, I'm on the same boat with you.

I applied to school in November (aka late) of 2004. I only applied to a few schools and headed in, completely oblivious to the application process. Upon rejection, I was the first one to stand there and blame the minorities, the children of dentists, affirmative action, slots reserved to people from specific countries.... fact of the matter is, if I would have done my homework, maybe I would have realized that the problem was ME back then and I could have spared myself 2 years. I didn't bother retaking my DAT despite just an average score. I didn't have any dental observation. I didn't have a clue that November is too late to apply unless you have nearly a 4.0 and 23s on your DAT. I didn't contact any schools that I applied to to even let them know that I was interested. Be happy for others that got in and work on what you need to improve upon. Please don't bring others down, raise yourself up.

um how sad it would have been if you had gotten in back then...you wouldn't have ever met me! 😀

I have actually changed my additude about my co-worker a little bit....I know I should be happy for her instead of jealous and bitter that this process was so easy for her. I read that when you encounter someone that has what you want, God has put that person in your life to encourage you. You shouldn't be jealous, but be encouraged by it because you can also achieve what they have achieved. 🙂 When my frustrations have been at their highest, I have looked around to see 3 friends with an acceptance letter and one with 5 interviews coming up. Instead of turning green with envy, I'm looking at this as encouragement as I study to re-take the DAT.....😉

With your attitude, I can tell in a few years you will make a great dentist. Best of luck. I have no doubt that if you work hard at it, you will be accepted. Seriously, contact the schools you are most interested in and ask what you need to do. If they tell you, and you do it... do they have a reason to tell you no?

Hey, don't worry. I m pretty much sure that u will get in future; just try to call the schools n ask them what they are looking for n what u should do to improve ur stats..I applied to 23 school w/ average dat n above average gpa, so far I got 4 rejections and 1 interview to NYU. I got accepted at NYU even though this is not the school I wanted to go, but I m going there. So, sometimes in a life, u have to make decisions even u don't wanna do it. I think what dental schools are looking for is number, mainly gpa n dat scores. They
don't care about extracurricular activities too much..even I just had 2..Also try to apply early bcz I didn't hear anything back from school until dec. bcz my application was too late, it was in Oct. 25th, which is worse w/ average scores.. Try to improve ur gpa either by doing postbac or retake the dat...gdluck for ur bright future in dentistry..Keep remember that ur hard work will pay off later...take care..
