I got a few interviews last cycle. I got either waitlisted and rejected or got flat Rs. I had horrible interviews with my horrible interview skills. Does that possibly mean that they were all fed up with me and would not give me another chance? I'm seriously worried about it.

In my experience, you're not likely to get an interview at a school that gave you a post interview R. If you were waitlisted or priority waitlisted, then you may get an interview later in the cycle, especially if you're improved your application since last year.

Then, it's impossible to predict.
This^^^^. It's not about anyone being "fed up" with you. It's all about IIs being a limited resource.

I respectfully disagree with @MedSchoolTutors insofar as I don't think an improved application would be a trigger for these schools, since your application was already good enough to score an II last cycle. @gyngyn hit it on the head. If your R was due to a bad interview, yeah, you're unlikely to receive another shot at those schools. Put it out of your mind and focus on your other schools.

OTOH, if you were good, but just not good enough given the quality of the pool last cycle (i.e., were the WLs true WLs or soft Rs?), there is no reason they wouldn't bring you in again. Without knowing whether or not your WLs were soft Rs, there is no way to know.

Either way, there is really nothing to worry about here because it is out of your hands. If it were me, I'd have reapplied to the WL schools, but not bothered with the straight R ones where I received interviews, but that's done now, so just wait and see what happens. Worrying isn't going to change anything, so why waste the energy?

Bigger question -- did you improve your "horrible" interview skills? If so, with an improved application, it's a whole new game for you this cycle. You already know you were good enough to score a few IIs last cycle, and should do even better this time around with a better application. Layer improved interviewing skills on top of that, and you have everything necessary to succeed. Good luck!!

I'll share my experience since I'm a reapplicant with good stats GPA/MCAT (LM 74) and what I thought were good interview skills.

Last cycle, I had 5 interviews, although of 4 of them were February - April and one of them I got in late August. All of them resulted in post-interview WL. I believe that my interview skills were good not great but what I think held me back was my clear lack of clinical hours (pretty late premed, then COVID-19, etc.). This cycle, I added at least 200 clinical hours in primary and specialty care environments (may be up to 400 depending on how projected hours, certain activities that are in the "gray area" are counted, etc.) as well as a poster presentation through my research job and really beefed up my writing.

Even with what 99.9% of people would call a much improved application, I have not received a single interview from a school I interviewed at last year. I have, however, received 3 interviews already, one of which was from a school that outright rejected me in November of 2020. So there's definitely hope. Don't get too hung up on it, and just focus on doing your best.

+1
not a single school that accepted or interviewed me in the 2018 cycle interviewed me again this cycle. Not even the one in which I talked to the Dean of admissions multiple times through phone meetings. 1 in which I was rejected decided to interview me.

I think it’s just not really worth the schools’ time to reinterview candidates when they have so many to choose from. The caveat being state schools in states that interview most in state applicants.

so once you get interviewed at one school and never get it again even if you apply 2 cycles later or later than that? or just one cycle

You definitely won’t be interviewed by the same school twice in one cycle.

It’s possible that the same school could interview you twice over multiple cycles. I just don’t that it’s super likely based on a limited sample that I have seen and practicality (again; the caveat being if you are in state at a school like Nebraska, KU, Arkansas etc…This is very common and I have seen it in multiple threads. To the point where I’m suprised more pre-meds aren’t trying to move and apply from an advantageous stage now that covid has made more work remote)

Not at all. It totally depends on why you were previously rejected. A lot of people on SDN report not being called off the WL in one cycle, and then being accepted in another. As you might know, many schools WL everyone they don't accept post-II, while others send out post-II Rs. Of those that send everyone to the WL, some are really soft Rs while others are true WL.

If you fall into the latter group, they very well might have taken you had a spot opened up, so why wouldn't they re-interview you in a subsequent cycle, especially if you apply with an improved application? Answer: they would! OTOH, if they hated you after the interview, then, yeah, they probably won't want to see you again, no matter how much you improved on paper. Unfortunately, there is no way to know whether or not your WL was a soft R, so the smart move is probably to reapply if you were WL or R pre-II, but not to bother if you were R post-II. JMHO.

There are schools that expect you to improve after a failed cycle and will accept you after doing so. Sometimes all it may take is applying earlier the net time, if you applied late.

Do not use Vox as a prototype applicant, given that he has a massive red flag that ruined his accepts the last time he applied.
