Takes a few minutes to learn and a lifetime to master, I read somewhere.

Think the cards you are dealt are important?

After watching this hand by the icon Phil Ivey, I'm not so sure anymore....shows you how deep this game is and how much no-limit-hold'em is more about what you think that I'm thinking you're thinking what I've concluded that you're convinced that I've got than about what cards you hold.

And if you can get to the end of that weird sentence I wrote, and you really understand it, its time to quit anesthesia.

I only partially understand.

Thats why I still work in a hospital.

That's exactly (well, not verbatim) what James Bond said in "Casino Royale" - you're not playing the cards, you're playing the man.

Or, the corollary - if you sit down at the table and look for the sucker, and don't see him, it's you.

This reminds me of The Princess Bride

because that would be the most famous classic blunder.....

Once phil leads the flop, the game of chicken is on b/c as they said, there's just no way he leads w/a jack. This is the type of hand where I'd call in position and raise any turn card b/c you represent a jack much more naturally. The flop raise which smells like bs especially w/a dry board and deep stacks. Once phil figures out that theres no way the other guy has jack b/c he wouldn't raise the flop with it he can come over the top. The 5th bet though is pretty classic and really unbelieveable.

The key to remember here is that they are playing tournament poker and guaranteed a 2nd place finish at worst. You can be much more libral w/your chips in that type of structrure as opposed to a cash game. I love clips like this b/c when most people watch them, they attempt to mimick these plays live in cash games and put themselves in some pretty awful spots.

C/ya @ the tables jet

What a bunch of lunatics. So many chips, such ugly hole cards.

I'm staying in the hospital.

one thing i might add is that phil had to have felt absolutely certain about his read on this guy to be able to come over the top twice like that. he probably already made up his mind that he was full of isht on the flop round and stuck with his read as the hand developed. it really comes from the culmination of betting patterns and play-style from previous hands, as well as some factor of visual tells that gives these crazy good players the type of reads that they have. so what's just as important as this hand are the hands before it, but we dont get to see them on tv cuz they're boring..
