I know there are a lot of threads about how to prepare for an interview and I apologize if this thread is redundant. What I've done so far is research the school's program and come up with a solid answer for the big question: "Why dentistry?" I've also thought of a few questions that I would want to ask the interviewer. Aside from that, I haven't done anything else because it seems that going into the interview just being yourself and answering the questions as they come might be better...BUT then again, this is my first time interviewing at a professional school.

I've shadowed dentists and orthodontists and I feel comfortable talking to them about my interests so I always figured an interview would be the same. Is this a bad approach to take? Should I do a mock interview?

Thanks guys and good luck to all those who are getting ready to interview!!!

If you can arrange one, do so. Things sound different coming out of your mouth than they do in your head. And your delivery can hurt you if it's bad and you can't put a thought together that remotely makes sense. You are correct in the fact that just going in there and being yourself is the best thing to do. You can't memorize answers and there is no way to prepare for every possible thing that could be asked. At least look at the questions under the interview feedback on SDN to have ideas fresh in your head. Just standard interview questions that you don't think about on a daily basis.

i dont think a mock interview is necessary, but I do believe being prepared for the most common questions. Don't memorize, but you should get a feel of how you would answer several questions. Example: " Strengths and weaknesses, Ethical issues, why should we chose you over others, etc".

You don't have to do a mock interview. However, I would have a friend or family member ask you a few of the questions like why dentistry?, Why this school?, What are your strengths/weaknesses?, etc... Answer the question out loud (just being yourself) and see how the answers come out. Usually it will go quite a bit different then you imagined, at least until you practice a bit.

Good luck!👍

You must come prepare...Do a mock interview!! it will relief stress and will help you arrange your thoughts. Why not to do a mock interview?

I agree! If you have somewhere where you can do a mock interview then do it. For some reason I was assuming the OP did not have somewhere to do a mock interview (his/her school doesn't offer them). If that is the case then find a family or friend but if you have the opportunity to do one then do it. 👍

I keep asking all of my questions before the interview, then I find myself scrambling to think of one on the spot. Keep that in mind, and save some up.

Yup, I think so too. You don't need a mock interview.

Thanks for all the input guys...I don't have anywhere to go for a mock interview. I suppose I could see if my undergrad would offer me one. My brother said he'll sit down and interview me - I just hope that he can give me good feedback 🙂

Yeah, talk out the answers with a friend or family member. Make sure you can piece together some coherent ideas. If it doesn't come out in ornate and flowery language, don't worry. Just make some sense, get the main points across, and be yourself.

I've been searching this forum for common interview questions and I keep running into people talking about an "Interview Feedback Forum". I can't seem to find it on SDN though, does it still exist?

Yes, scroll to the very top and look at the tool bar just above the advertisement (its at the very tipy top). It has "Bookstore Interview Feedback Answers Partner orgs Partner sites and search".
