The community I live in has finally ran out of its supply. I was unaware of its discontinuance myself until recently when one of my scripts were returned to me. So what are you guys using now for sedation for outpt. procedures. Ya know CT's, echo's and such. How about for EEG's, since using a benzo could alter the EEG reading?

I'm not a fan of chloral for those sorts of procedures (really anything outpatient), but I do use it once in a while in the unit for kids who are on longer term opiates/benzos and need something to get through the night. We have a small supply left that we try to keep hidden. Otherwise it's a longer acting drug that can compromise a kid's respiratory drive, so I'm pretty hesitant to use it in the outpatient setting. I realize others have done/still do this though.

Most CTs I feel can be done without much, as can echos. I don't think I've ever sedated for an EEG. If someone is truly combative and needs a CT I'd consider propofol, especially if it's a CTA or something more involved. Versed would also be a reasonable option.

Precedex may be an option for an EEG or echo though it's expensive. Again, I've never sedated for one.
