I am a PGY1 FM Resident and I am resigning at the end of the year to pursue a residency in Psychiatry. Unfortunately, I made the decision rather late and I haven't gotten any interview offers yet. 🙁 I think my application was just too late.

If I don't get into a program for next year, what work can I realistically get for the next year (I will apply to programs again next year)? I will likely have to pay on my loans and will need a solid income. Where do you find these types of jobs?

I think you are not showing enough initiative. Since you are not a US senior med student you are not restricted to the NRMP. I recommend embarking on a shotgun approach of contacting all 180+ psych programs in the country and giving yourself a chance at getting a prematch offer. I would email each PD with your CV and ask if they consider prematches in general. This in effect also asks if they would consider a prematch for you.
The match is going to get more competitive each year and I see no benefit of sitting out for a year.

👍 I totally agree, I think it's too soon to give up. Good luck! :luck:

Have you tried Resident Swap? It looks like there are openings for PGY-2s, though I don't know if they are looking for someone to start now or in July.

I agree with the above.
Also, you could consider looking for research positions...it's generally hard to get hired for 1 year, though, and employers may not want to deal with getting you a visa.

Sorry! I meant Family Medicine (FM) resident, not a foreign medical grad resident. No visa required! 🙂
