I've noticed that after during and after nights when I don't sleep, my body and more importantly my hands become really shaky (caffeine only exacerbates this). I'm quite interested in pursuing surgery, but am concerned about my performance during nights on call when I may similarly get no shut-eye. Has anyone in surgery experienced this or know someone else who has? How have you/they dealt with this? Thanks. 🙂

Caffeine worsens tremor. Beta blockers and booze improve tremor. Also, experience and muscle memory help.

Thanks neusu. I'm curious then - how common is it among you and your colleagues to drink coffee, etc. if it magnifies tremors?

Sounds like you have an essential tremor. Stress, lack of sleep, and caffeine can all exacerbate. BB and booze make it better

The same also exacerbates physiological tremor. Treatment is the same though, BB and booze.

Seriously, booze? Is this somekind of joke. If you really have problem with tremor, beta-blockers are ok.
If booze solves your tremors, probably you are in withdrawl.
Dont mind the coffee, if you have to work in middle of the night and you are shaky. Drink coffee, wash your face with cold water, and very important: eat something and you are good to go.
Those tremors are probably more related with low blood sugar, low cortisol, dawning effect. If i wake up too early i can have tremors and feel like complete ****, till i eat proper and have some time to gather mysellf up.

No one is suggesting drinking at work.

Alcohol does improve physiologic/essential tremors.
and?
This guy is worried that his tremor might affect his surgical performance. In the same context someone mentions booze helps tremors.
I dont know what is your definition of "suggesting" but to me it seems pretty solid.
I think the word you were trying to use is advocating.

Holy christ Kahreek, calm yourself. And yeah, I suggested it. And no, I didn't suggest it while he works. Very common way to diagnose essential tremor is if it improves with drinking. A neurologist doesn't say, 'hey, go drink and tell me if it gets better' but he will say 'you notice it gets better if you have a few drinks?'

Lack of sleep will ultimately damage your nerves. Some are more sensitive to lack of sleep than others.

Me, I don't get tremors as far as I know (I already have a nasty baseline tremor to start with lol). But I DO get neuralgias and paresthesias if I don't get enough sleep.

Source?

I mean, yes, staying awake long enough will eventually kill you, but my understanding is that as long as you do get to sleep eventually, short term deprivation doesn't have serious lasting effects.

Neuralgias and paresthesia? I'd like to see the reference on that one too.

Sacrificing ur health for money just so later you can sacrifice your money for ur health is part of the game. It's insane but then again everyone's doing it.
