NO TAXATION WITHOUT REPRESENTATION!
Food for thought: This past week we've seen a rekindling of healthcare reform debate. Polls undeniably show a majority of Americans want reform, but polls also undeniably show they do NOT want the current reform bills being considered. Rasmussen polls from this past week show 56% opposed to the current bills being considered vs 41% in favor of current proposed legislation.
Among the primary complaints Americans have are the tax increases inherent in both the House and Senate bills. If congress chooses to NOT listen to their collective constituents and pushes this legislation through regardless, then in effect they've partaken in TAXATION WITHOUT REPRESENTATION. They (congress) are obligated to represent WE THE PEOPLE.
By the way, does anyone recall what happened back in the late 1700's when we faced taxation without representation? A little thing called the American Revolution. My point? A considerable number in congress are endorsing one of the primary encroachments of liberty that led to our succession from both British Parliament and British Monarchy.
The following quote is from Nancy Pelosi: "We will go through the gate. If the gate is closed, we will go over the fence. If the fence is too high, we will pole vault in. If that doesn't work, we will parachute in. But we are going to get health care reform passed for the American people for their own personal health and economic security and for the important role that it will play in reducing the deficit."
What exactly is she trying to jump over, pole vault over? Could it be the American people? It certainly couldn't be the Republican party as her party had a congressional super majority and still could not get the current healthcare bills passed.
As a physician, I am an endorser of healthcare reform. I agree we need to allow affordable access to all US citizens, but the current forms of this partisan legislation will only add insult to injury with regards to the US economy. We've seen the financial failure of predecessor forms of legislation: Medicare and Medicaid, both of which are financially insolvent, and the Massachusetts healthcare system which led to an INCREASE in premiums.
