Make it up.
168% sure they won't check it as long as you make it realistic. You volunteered at the free clinic. You volunteered at a food shelter. Blah, blah, blah. There's zero accountability when it comes to bull**** filler ECs like volunteerism.
Don't lie about research, though. If it's blank, it's blank.

This guy..
You seriously have no volunteering?

You seriously have no volunteering?
For a med student applying to residency? There are tons of people in that situation. I was tempted to just put my undergrad volunteer activities on ERAS, but opted out and left it blank. Especially for residency apps, noone cares about volunteering as a med student.
Work/research/volunteering before med school generally doesn't get put in ERAS...although if it was substantial, i'm sure you can put it. There were people I know who did a good amount of research before med school, and placed it on their app due to the relevancy of it.

Come at me bro.
It's much higher yield to spend the 5 minutes it takes to make up volunteer activities on ERAS than to actually do them. Better to spend that time on Heart of the Swarm or masturbating.
So you're saying you didn't continue those hundreds of hours you were doing as a pre-med?
Oh my...
Oh my...
I don't see a problem in leaving it blank; volunteering is not a de facto requirement for residency programs like it was for getting into medical school.
DO NOT make stuff up. In addition to it being wrong, there is a real risk of it blowing up in your face. They may not bother to check it out, but anything you put on ERAS is an invitation for them to ask you about it in an interview, and it will likely become apparent if you're just making s*** up.

And I agree, leaving it blank isn't gonna hurt you compared to making stuff up, and having to prepare a rehearsed answer when they do ask about(and they will!). Sure, you can argue it takes 5 mins to make something up....but leaving it blank won't hurt you. I see where people come from in terms of feeling bad for having a small "works/experience" section. However, it isn't a make or break deal which is good.
Pretty much none at all.
WTF am I supposed to put on my CV/ERAS?
And, do we put work/research before medical school on a CV and ERAS?
I'm putting stuff from high school.
If they search my name on PubMed that's what'll pop up. I'll be glad to talk about how I had no idea what I was doing...I don't see a problem in leaving it blank; volunteering is not a de facto requirement for residency programs like it was for getting into medical school.

Not that I'm condoning lying about volunteering, but come on now, is anyone really going to be able to tell if you're making stuff up? Medical students are experts at embellishing/fabricating stories to make themselves look good. Really, how hard would it be to describe your experience at a local clinic?
How common is it for medical schools to not require a certain amount of volunteer hours? I have to do 80 in the first two years.
I've never heard of such a requirement. 80 hours seems like a fair amount of required volunteer work.

It's really not that bad. I have 20 so far but that's only from this semester since last semester I was more focused on acclimating to med school.

Sigh... sad that this comes from the same guy who urges people to think about professionalism and consequences on another thread....
What about work before med school?

Is it really volunteer if your school made you do it?
My school also made us do this. I wasn't going to consider it volunteering, it for sure wasn't optional and I didn't "volunteer" to do it.
Volunteering? No, that doesn't count. They only want stuff done in medical school. What about work before med school?

Fair enough. I'm used to volunteer = community service. Fine lol I'll refer to it strictly as community service! Indeed that's what it is, anyway.
How many hours do you have to serve?

I honestly can't remember, haha. I think it was forty total but it was only over M1, is yours over M1 and M2?

Yeah we need 80 by the end of M2. We have quite a few events planned next year so I think I'll be fine. I'm planning on going on a mission trip next year. I've always wanted to do one.

Dude, what? Volunteering for residency apps? No one cares unless it's a significant experience that you feel compelled to talk about it. You shouldn't bother to make it up when applying to residency.
Blump

We have 100 required before graduation.
It always makes me chuckle when the "powers that be" say, "It's not in the spirit of community service to _______." It's also not in the spirit of community service to require a certain number of hours from your students so you can brag about it in newspapers.
This is way before it's important to me, but just so I know. What exactly do they mean by "work experience"? I know this is probably a stupid question, but I just don't even know what I would include.
Anybody have a statistic on the average number of volunteer hours when applying?
Many have around 100-150
Many have around 100-150
That's absurd
That's absurd
Oh sorry, do you mean how many before you apply to medical school? I mean 100-150 for that.
Otherwise I don't know for actual mes students. Sorry!

I figured you were talking pre-med. It's all good. I'm just curious how my 80 compares to the average for med students. Even if it is below average, I don't see myself sacrificing time for other things (research) for more volunteer hours.
It is completely OK to put college activities, as the residency programs know your medical school career is rather busy.
Blank. If they don't want you for who you really are, do you really want them?
