No work experience = bad??????

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
just put it in. if you have no jobs whatsoever that will look much worse. while i was in college i could only manage summer stuff, none of it medical. i shadowed and did some research to overcome this (thank god). they will understand if you only have seasonal jobs - its part of life for some people.

I would put them in.. Shows you know how to work under pressure... you know how seasonal jobs can be doing the holidays.. definetly pressure😉

I wanna leave them out. Is that bad?

Having jobs shows that you have had experience working with others and having to balance your personal life and a job-- all while following a schedule. That's generally a good thing. If you're worried that they'll call your ex-boss and find out that you were fired for smoking pot in bathroom...well, they won't. So, you can forget about that.

This is something that I must admit I get a "kick" out of when I listen to the younger generation. I know I'm an old fart know it all...

But there's nothing at all to be ashamed of when you work fellas...

I don't care if the job was framing condos down at the shore for 2 weeks a summer or cutting your elderly neighbors lawn ... It's "work"... There's nothing to be ashamed of when it comes to your work history... so long as you don't list things like "pimp" or "loanshark" or local mob muscle lol...

I don't care if you worked at McDonalds... It's a good job for a lot of people. There's absolutely nothing to be ashamed of.

I think some of the "rich kid" bad behavior in this country has some of their peers convinced that people who work are like second class citizenry..

Hilarious. Where I live at the shore, most of the jobs that used to be held by younger kids are held by foreign nationals.... Some of it is just funny to us old fogeys I guess.

Darn right you list where you worked... You got paid. It was work.

even when some of them jobs only lasted 2-3 weeks??? Does that show lack of commitment??? Thanks for all the advise.🙂

Well remember.... That two weeks taught you about interpersonal relationships and you had the opportunity to talk to Bill about his life and learned the struggles of the local community.

Its not how long you work... its what you get out of it.

niceeeee. You can spin anything on everything, I suppose. Thanks for the tip.👍

What kind of seasonal jobs? I listed that I mowed lawns for neighbors.

I would include them if I were you. On a kind of related note, what do I do about being a stay-at-home mom? I just don't want the schools to see the last time I worked was three years ago and wonder what the heck I've been doing since then. I've been in school doing a Master's program but only part-time.

Being a stay at home mom can be definitely turned into a HUGE HUGE plus for med school applications. I wrote an entire essay on it for "what's the thing that has best prepared you for med school" (or something along that lines) for MSUCOM. I got an interview offer VERY quickly as an OOS student.

In reality, I think the adcoms barely skim that section of the app, so I wouldn't worry about it too much. If it's something you really want to draw their attention to you'll have to mention it in one of your essays or an interview to get there attention. Otherwise, I think they just look for evidence that you do more than play video games outside of class.

I think maybe it would be a good idea to include it in an essay if given the opportunity. I'm sure I could also address it in an interview if given the opportunity. I guess I just didn't want them to think that all I do is play video games and take a couple classes.

There have been periods where I haven't been volunteering at all. My husband and I are both applying this year, we're both doing an MPH degree and we don't use daycare to save money so if he is in class or at work I'm home taking care of the kids and vice versa. It kind of restricts our time more than if we did use childcare. I will definitely try to emphasize being able to balance everything and take care of our kids at the same time. Thanks for the input!

Well, half my jobs I can put down I suppose. Guess I'll have to leave the online poker, track bets, ticket scalping, kind of stuff off. Although, that did make me more money in a week than most of my jobs I have did in a couple of months. (Mainly the poker and tickets 😛)

If you worked at all during college just put it on..never hurts. Also, it can show a different skill set. I can make omlettes, and have the knife skills like a champ from all my days in the kitchen being a cook and prep cook.

Well atleast now I know I can put down ski rental equipment clerk, paintball referee, telephone interviewer (not putting it down), and flooring/patio furniture salesman. Whoever has this beat, let me know.
