Can anyone help predict the nomenclature of this molecule below ?

Ok, Exactly it's the prefix that tripped me up.

It's Heptanonitrile --not a hexanonitrile...

I ask this b/c I had calculate the molecular weight of the molecule. And when the problem discussed heptanonitrile, I didn't realize that the carbon of the nitrile was included in the "heptane" prefix. It seems so strange...

2 different nomenclature systems:

1. "nitrile" system: count the carbons and append "nitrile." Under this system, the compound is heptanonitrile.
2. "cyano" system: count the backbone carbons (exclude the carbon that is part of the cyano group). Under this system, the compound is 1-cyanohexane.

Hmm interesting.Thanks.

That's dumb. Nomenclature shouldn't be tested like that :/.
