I have read through many different threads and have gotten the general feeling that non-accredited schools are "bad" (for lack of a better term). But what I did come across in the many threads is that someone said that after graduation, when a person works for about 4-5 years somewhere as an optometrist, it doesn't matter where they went to school at that point since the experience evens out.

What I'm wondering is, what if someone went to a non-accredited school like Midwestern in AZ, for instance, then did a residency somewhere after graduation for a couple of years, is their schooling still a "tarnish" on their record? Perhaps I don't understand how residencies post-graduation work.. I couldn't find an answer to this in the forums.

Anyone.. Anyone..?

Do you plan on doing a residency? If so, then you should take into consideration the reputation of the optometry school you plan to attend. I'm not 100% sure, but I've heard that in order to get a residency, the institution you graduated from is a big factor (so you would want to choose a school that is accredited and has a good reputation.)

In response to your first question, I personally think that experience would outweigh where you graduate from after a few years in the field.

Thank you optomgirl. I wasn't aware that the residency programs take an OD's school into strong consideration. I am not explicitly planning on doing residency but I may. I always wondered how the accreditation status of a school affects the student post-graduations. From what I've gathered on here, it seems that it is hard to find jobs for non-accredited school graduates in private practice, but I was wondering, "Well, what about if they did residency before finding a job? Does that "help" their case?"
