This seems like a problem that not many people would have so I posted it under nontraditional student. Any answers would be very helpful.

After graduating high school (class of 2000) I took a semester off, not sure if I wanted to continue my education, but eventually decided to do a semester out of state at UNLV (Las Vegas). I chose UNLV because they had a program that allowed people to take some classes at the school without actually being admitted into the school. The idea is if you did well enough you could use these credits toward a degree at UNLV once being admitted. Because I didn't do well in high school or on my SAT, I decided to give this a shot. About half way through the semester I was having some non-school problems and basically gave up on the semester. Around spring break I called it a semester and stopped going to classes. I can get more specific about this if need be, but I don't really think it matters in relation to my question.

Here's the deal. It is almost 2008 now and about 7 years have passed since then, I hadn't really thought about it in a while. Since then I have almost completed my degree in Biochemistry from my state university, I have 3 courses left, with over a 3.9 GPA. Now in the last year or two I decided that maybe patient care, more specifically becoming a physician, might be something I would like to do with my life. Here are my questions...

1. Do classes taken as a non-admitted student to a university have to be reported to medical schools?

2. Today I looked to see if I could find some transcripts from UNLV. I found that I did have a student ID, but according the the student service part of the web site no transcripts exist for me. Is it possible that because I never applied to UNLV that my grades never became official? If I need to report my grades, how can I if they don't exist?

I don't figure many other people have had this problem because my route has been a long and odd one, but anyone who might have any idea as to what I need to do with this situation please do help.

if you have a grade (to your knowledge or not), you need to report it on your application. however, if your transcript shows up empty, then you did not receive a grade and don't have to put anything on your amcas afaik.

if you can, you should go in person to the school's record/admin office and request an unofficial transcript or academic record. if going in person is not possible or reasonable, you can call and ask.

if they have a record of you enrolling but without grades, you can forward your blank transcript to aamc. if they have no record of you AT ALL, i don't see why you should put you enrolled in this school at all in the aamc. however, if you have a student id, you probably have some sort of record at the school. what i would do is request an official verification of enrollment (non-enrollment) in your case and see what happens.

I don't know whether you have to report that UNLV transcript or not, but I can tell you for sure what you should do: call AMCAS on Monday, explain your situation, and ask them how to handle it. If you don't mind, it would be great if you'd come back here and post the answer in case this problem comes up again for a future student. Congrats on your excellent GPA and best of :luck: to you with your apps. 🙂

Yes, if you earned grades and there's a transcript.

It's not about whether you were accepted or not, it's about how UNLV's registrar counts attendance, and it sounds like yours wasn't counted. In your shoes, I think I'd call UNLV, be very honest, and ask if there's any transcript at all to represent that semester. You don't want to get surprised.

Personally, I enrolled in a long distance class, years ago, that I never bothered to finish, and now I take regular enrolled classes at the same school. The long distance class doesn't show up on my transcript, and I don't report it to medical schools.

My $.02. Best of luck to you.

If you were NEVER admitted, then you don't have grades. Do be aware that AMCAS requires you to list every school attended since secondary school regardless of type/grade. If you list a school, then you need to submit a transcript (which in your case would be empty). In that event, you don't have to worry about those classes affecting your GPA anyway.

Wow, this is one of my first posts on here and I can't believe how fast the replies were, thank you all very much!

I want to be completely honest in my quest and so I will use all of your advice and get to the bottom of this. I will update this post if/when I find out anything.

Feel free to add more replies if anyone has more advice or knowledge.

i want to clarify that not all schools will send blank transcripts. if OP never recieved a single grade (including incompletes, withdrawn, etc.), then it's possible the school will not send a transcript (ie they won't send one b/c one does not exist). in that case, the OP needs to get a verification of enrollment to show that he has not taken any classes at the university. i say this from personal experience.

in any case, the OP should first talk to the school to see what record, if any, he or she has with that school. i would even go as far as to request a verification of enrollment sent to my home to read what it says.

You don't have to be admitted to receive a grade. Many schools allow for students to take classes as a visiting student or non-degree seeking student without having to do any application, and still receive credit for the classes. I have done this at two schools. I would definately call the school and ask!

I would contact UNLV and either a) get them to produce a transcript for you (empty or otherwise) or b) get them to explain your situation IN WRITING and that they cannot produce a transcript for you.

Then I would take this information to AMCAS and ask for their advice on how you should proceed. If they require a transcript, it has to come from UNLV directly to them. Keep that in mind should there be any difficulties.

I figured I would update this thread because I found some stuff out. Long story short, credits taken as a non-admitted student show up on transcripts the same as any other grades, in fact it doesn't even state that I wasn't admitted at the time.

Can't wait to see how a C, D, and F affect my 3.94 GPA. The over/under is 3.8.

They certainly won't be a shining star on your app, but they aren't going to sink you. You've done such strong work since then that adcoms will be very confident to brush that off as "youthful indiscretion." Even with a 3.8 you will be very competitive. Applying this cycle? Best of luck.
