Hello All

Im a third year Psy.D. student at Widener Univeristy. I have commuted to Widener from Maryland all three years (64 miles one way) and I am currently looking for an internship that is closer to my home. Widener has a internship placement model that guarantees a placement, but only in the tristate area. We are allowed to find our own interships if they meet certain specifications. Does anyone know any possible internship placements that do not participate in the APPIC matching process? Im looking for an inpatient placement or a placement that works with children (or one that meets both of these criteria).

P.S. due to my computer not being able to use the spell check on this forum, my spelling does not reflect the quality of Widener's program 😀

I'm sorry that this is off topic, but how do you like Widener? I have applied there, and like what I have seen so far of the program. Do they offer assistantships, or have you been able to find part time employment to help offset high program costs? Even though it is a psychodynamic program, is CBT training offered?

Thanks 🙂. Sorry that I couldn't answer your question!

Not a problem.

The program is fantastic. We are in the field all five years (three years of practicum and two years of internship) of the program working in various areas while completing course work. The classes are pretty intense and the expectations for your performance are high. There are different areas to specialize in: Psychodynamic therapy, neuropsych, MBA/PsyD, Psyd/JD, shcool psych, Biofeedback (the only school that offers this), and sexuality. All of these are integrated into the core structure of the program so they are not generic offshoots. The model as a whole is a generalist model so you do not have to specialize. The psychodynamic stuff is very interesting and I garuntee that it is different than any training that one would recieve elsewhere. The program itself is no longer psychodynamic but, instead, integrative which is great because you are exposed to many different views. The program offers great trianing in psychological assessment and report writing (from the Rorshach to the WAIS), which is training that seperates me from other students that I know. One quick fact is that Dr. Abrams, the founder of the program, is one of the founders of the Psy.D. how awsome is that. He is over 80 and teaches a psychodynamic theories class your first semester. I highly recomend this program. As I mentioned above, I had practicum at places where I was doing the same work as interns. You are provided a lot of experience and oppurtunity but you are certainly expected to perform.

I hope that helped. I will answer any other questions that you may have.

Wow I did not really answer your questions at all. Like a lot of psy.d. programs there is no funding what so ever. I have only looked for work my first year but was unsuccessful. My wife is currently our only money maker but we are surviving. As mentioned in my post, I commute to and from widener which take me about an hour and twenty minutes so between that and the clasess, practicum, and studying, I don't think I would have much time to work. Many people in my class do find jobs, though. Many get hired by previous practicum I beleive. Its definetly doable and worth it, but its a struggle. My first paycheck is set aside for as much food as I can possibly eat 😍

There are oppurtunities to work with proffesors on research projects but I don't think this is paid work. Im not sure though. The work study offered by widener is a bit of a joke and not worth the time and is likely not psychology related.

Thank you for the information 🙂 It does sound like a great program, and the thought of the captive internship is very appealing. Unfortunately, the lack of funding is scary. Although I know that the program does not offer any tuition reimbursement, I was hoping that there are at least paid assistantship opportunities, such as teaching assistant positions. I suppose if I were to gain admission into the program, I would need to find a part time job. I appreciate the information, and good luck finding an internship placement! 🙂

I forgot to mention that you receive a small stipend on your fourth and fith year at your internship. This is usually paid directly to Widener to cover your tuition for year five. So for a five year program you are paying for four, which helps.

Take care

There are indeed programs that participate in the match that are non-appic members. Is that what your looking for? However, I am not sure how one would search for them since to be listed in the directory on APPIC's website, you have to be an APPIC member.

I don't have an answer for you, but if you find some non-appic sites in Maryland, let me know. My husband goes to school in DC and I received zero interviews that were less than 2 1/2 hours from DC. Boo. I'm also interested in child or adolescent focused sites.

You should double check with the Maryland licensure board to make sure they will accept a non-APPIC site. I believe they will accept an "APA, CPA, or APPIC-equivalent" internship site, though it is worth a phone call.
