Can anybody comment on the reputation/quality of the NYC & NYC-adjacent programs aside from Columbia.

Specifically, I'm having trouble getting an idea of the quality of the Albert Einstein Beth Israel program or the Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson program. How do these compare to Cornell, Mount Sinai, Albert Einstein Bronx, NYU?

Thanks for any insight.

Cornell is probably the 2nd best NYC program after Columbia. I was told that Mount Sinai is particularly good for MS and Movement disorders but some of the other specialties are under-represented, but it is probably 3rd best in NYC. NYU has more of a private practice feel to it so it might not be as good for learning, they are best known for epilepsy. However, I know someone who was really impressed with the program and ranked it #1 on match day.

I haven't heard any negatives about Einstein Beth Israel except that it is a smaller program and in more of a community hospital. If you like the idea of a community hospital then go for it but if you got invites to the other programs you listed then BI might not be worth it.

I don't consider Rutgers RWJ an NYC program. There is a NJ transit train that can take you to Manhattan in about 30 minutes is my guess, but odds are if you go there it will be too inconvenient to visit NYC much. The other programs you listed are in NYC and along the subway, so if location is important to you then you should rank the other programs you listed higher.

Thank you so much for your input, that was quite helpful. However, if you or anybody else have any info on RWJ, even though you don't consider it NYC adjacent, I'd appreciate your thoughts.

I'm from Manhattan & well aware of the location issues, but I have a spouse with limitations on where he can find work & it's better to be a 40 min train ride apart than hours of flight apart! I guess rather than comparing within NYC, I should have asked or also asked whether I should forgo an interview there to attend one(s) at Jefferson or Brown -- is there an increase in quality that would make it worthwhile to have the inconvenience of an extra hour or two in any commute to see each other. I'm leaning towards "yes" but am going off of so little information that I'm uncomfortable.

Did you apply to SUNY Downstate, Stonybrook, NS-LIJ, Maimo, and NY Medical too? I think both SUNYs would be fine even if they aren't as well known as the other Manhattan programs, since they are still both academic programs.

If you are looking for a career where you do research and may someday become the dept chair then the sacrifice is worth it to look outside of NYC. If you are looking to be a clinical neurologist in either private practice or at a hospital and do a fellowship at a mid-level program then I don't think the inconvenience is worth it. You can still get a fellowship at Columbia from any of the other NYC programs, even the ones you think are less prestigious.

I did apply very broadly. I am just looking for info to figure out which interviews to cancel, since they are coming in so sporadically and info to compare programs is so sparse (some of the websites are pretty shameful). If we say location doesn't matter and pretend I never asked it that way, and assume I want to get into the best program to prepare me to work in an academic setting to do clinical research, would you cancel a RWJ interview if it freed you up to go to and interview at Jefferson, Brown, or Einstein Beth Israel?

I don't necessarily think Einstein BI is better than RWJ, I think Jeff and Brown are probably slightly better than RWJ although its not drastically different. If you were going to cancel for Penn or Hopkins that would make sense but at this level I think its negligible:

Yeah. I've been using that list, too, but it's 8 years old--program directors have changed & a few programs I've applied to aren't even on there (not even sure if the umdnj listed refers to rwj). I'm not sure if some of the rankings would be different today--Cleveland clinic is so high, but currently the program has many FMGs & DOs, so it feels like something might have happened.
