Me: Graduated college with 3.0 with handful of Ws. VERY strong upward trend. Halfway through the pre-reqs, I have a 4.0 in them. I am taking them at a community college, so that may hurt me a little, but trust me when I say that these classes are harder than they would be at my tier-two alma mater. 1500 SAT and 1400 GRE lead me to expect 30+ MCAT, though I could go down in flames. And I'll be taking the MCAT in April, along with having two pre-reqs (Org. 2 and Physics 2) that don't end until May.

Anyone have success getting into SMP or "hard science" programs with late-ish apps and bumpy records? If I don't start a program next fall, it's Carib and SGU or AUC in Jan. 2009.

Graduated from college with around a 2.8 & 33MCAT. I only had an upward trend in my 4th year of college. Did an SMP and got a 4.0 in the 1st semester. Got into medical school that year.

well, graduated undergrad with a 3.3 gpa in psych; didn't even know what MCAT even stood for! Then worked 1 yr as an emt... loved it. Got in a postbac program... took the mcat in april while finishing the second half of physics, biochem, and organic. Now ...anesthesia resident 😀

P.S I also went to a community college for the 1st two years of college.

If his city is the location of his med school I'd assume he was going to VCU.

I am a second year at MCV/VCU. I did VCU's Certificate program which is like an SMP right out of college.

Instatewaiter,

Thanks for the comment here - and numerous posts on a past VCU thread that I found quite helpful. Did you have any classmates who finished a masters degree in the year after the certificate program? I saw on their site that it's an option, but the procedure wasn't 100% clear.

yeah the cert program flows directly into a masters program. You basically take all of the classes the first year and if you dont get in to med school you do reasearch (+ a lab course) the second year to get a masters. A bunch of my friends did the masters.

while the option for the masters is nice, most people who end up getting into MCV/VCU medical school, get in during the first year. So the masters improves your stats but if you didnt perform well the first year, the masters is not going to make up for it.

If you guys have questions feel free to pm me but I dont want to hijack this thread.
